Manhunt Underway in Durant

9-8-05 - A manhunt is underway in Durant while two more have already been taken into custody.

Durant Police and Bryan County Deputies are all focusing in on the field just south of Highway 70 on Cemetery Road for a man that they say could be armed and dangerous.

23-year-old Kevin Leon Cross of Johnston County was wanted in an incident that happened Saturday where he allegedly shot at a vehicle on 69/75 with intent to kill.

Just after noon on Thursday, Police spotted a black GMC Jimmy that matched his vehicle description. When an officer tried to pull the vehicle over, a chase ensued stretching from Fourth and Main to Southeast First and Texas.

At that point, Cross jumped out and took off on foot while the other two occupants, one male and one female, were taken into custody. Police think Cross may have gotten a lift to another location.

"The whole perimeter has moved to the west for the search area," Durant Lt. Johnny Rutherford said.

The perimeter for this manhunt is set up from Cemetery Road West to 69/75. Tracker dogs and the OHP airplane have been called upon.

Police say they believe he could be on his way towards Johnston County, and that he might be armed with a 45 caliber hand gun.

Cross has had a history of run-ins with the law including several felony warrants in Johnston County. Police say he was last seen wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans, and they consider him armed and dangerous.

Durant schools were put on lockdown briefly today, but that was lifted after they determined Cross was not a threat to the schools.
