9-11-05 - Bryan County authorities are investigating the discovery of a dead body last night east of Durant on old Hwy 70 near the Blue River Bridge. They believe the body could be that of a missing Durant man.
22 year old Scotty Dean Sheffied has been missing since September 1st when he was last seen leaving his father's home. Sheffield was picked up from the home by Melissa Butler, who was later in a GMC Jimmy that led authorities on a chase through Bryan County.
Authorities will not say for sure if the body they discovered this morning is Sheffield's. They will wait for a medical examiner to make a positive identification. But Sheffield's family believes the body is Scotty's and says they want the people responsible punished.
Authorities are searching for three people they believe have information regarding the body and Scotty Sheffield's disappearance.
Two of the suspects were actually in custody late last week after the driver of a GMC Jimmy led police on a chase through Durant. That driver was 23 year old Kevin Leon Cross out of Johnston County. Cross faces several felony charges in Johnston County and was wanted in Bryan County for shooting at a vehicle last weekend. Cross was able to flee the scene of that chase on foot.
Also inside the vehicle were Melissa Butler and Gary Wayne Olsen, Jr. Both were arrested after the chase on Thursday, but later released.
First degree murder warrants are out for Cross and Olsen, Jr. A warrant is also out for Butler's arrest.
Authorities believe at least two of the suspects could be driving a white, 2001 Chevy pick-up truck. If you have any information on this crime, call Bryan County authorities.
