Not Even Close - Gas Tax Fails

9-14-05 - A proposal to increase state fuel taxes was overwhelmingly defeated Tuesday. 87 percent of voters said no to a proposed 5-cent per gallon hike in gasoline taxes and 8-cents on diesel fuel.

The statewide ballot proposal asked Oklahomans to raise the
17 cent per gallon gasoline tax and the 14 cent per gallon diesel
tax to 22 cents each. The increase would raise an estimated $150
million a year for road and bridge maintenance.

Supporters have faced an uphill battle because of high gasoline
prices. Recent polls have showed voters oppose the plan by a 2-to-1
margin.

Here's how the statewide voting broke down, with total precincts and precincts reporting.
