SHERMAN, TX -- A woman accused of embezzling money from Wilson N. Jones Medical Center has surrendered.

Michelle Lea Mendoza, 29, is charged with ‘felony theft of more than $1,500’ for stealing more than $7,000.

Police say she was altering deposit slips over a five-month period. Mendoza was an employee in a supervisory but non-medical position at the hospital.

I just spent two weeks at a hospital here in Savannah with my best friend who just found out she has cancer. It was heart breaking because the staff had to be made to do their job. To see that someone is stealing money from any hospital makes me see red! I hope that she gets locked up because most people that get place in the hospital have a hard enough time trying to figure out how they will be able to pay their bill, and here is this crook that will most likely make them jack up the prices of care to make up for this loss. She should be locked up and be made to pay every penny back!

Talk about taking money from someone!!! WNJ does it to the people and they just sit back and smile. My daughter had a ultra sound done there and they requested a $500 payment before the test. Well, when the bill came to the house from the insurance company, the test only cost $149. I called the Insurance company and they said this happens all the time and I should have just paid for the test and not used insurance. Now who is stealing money from who????? WNJ knows this and does not tell a single person to get the extra money.

Well? How much did she really steal? Your article reads...that she is charged with a theft of over $1500.00 for stealing more than $7,000.00. Makes no sense to me. Does that mean she stole $7001.00 or $25,000? Tell us please. You seem to know.

I was employed with a hospital west of Sherman and let me tell you, I believe it has a worse reputation than WNJ. Believe me, they have more meetings than any business I have ever seen and there are not consequences for anything that anyone does wrong. The people who dont do their job seem to be rewarded and the people who do there jobs get screwed! Every thing gets covered up just as it seems has happened at WNJ.

Anonymous, So that is why the cost are inflated at the hospital, to make up for all the indegent and healthcare funded programs we buy into. So why cant people like you get off your duff and complain to legislator about this. While in the mean time the people who pay cash and do have insurance suffer from your over inflated prices in an attempt to "make it up" elsewhere. And did anyone think that maybe Michelle had been reported to her Director several times about this and he just covered it up like nothing happened. ACCOMPLICE????

I heard that most accidents happen within 2 miles of home so I moved.

You don't know what you are talking about. None of the board members get paid anything. No donuts are served at the meetings. The hospital gets screwed by every managed care payer and the federal government. Healthcare is the most screwed up financial model anyone has ever seen. Anybody know of any other industry that gets paid $.30 of every $1.00 they charge? Don't even get me started on how much free care they have to give to people who refuse to pay their bills. If the only hospital in town is TMC (now run by an out-of-state for- profit enterprise), anyone without insurance is going to end up at the free clinics.

yes it is a shame it's also a glmpse of how "f-ed" this soicety is. the big picture here is that "We the People" r all being pushed in2 an every tightening noose, edged out of jobs that made this country great, forced 2swallow the B.S. from those in the "Know". local & federal agencies as well as wnj adminstrators have lost touch with the common man. granted they, we, all have our bills 2pay but why don't U ever hear of them making the "Sacrifices"? from the kxii news desk:"Today, WNJ admins has voted unanimously 2take voluntary pay cuts" or the big oil co. "Oil co. have decided today that 3billion$ profits have screwed enough people & have decided that dropping2 1.5 billion profits will make u.s. a stronger nation"??? never gonna happ'n. anyway it was a bad choice she made but why make such a big deal of it we are being squeezed by much bigger fish than her and u don't see them going to jail. don't hate the player hate the game.

Doesnt it make you wonder if she didnt have a partner in this crime ?

It is a shame that things in this womans life had come to this. Even with the best reason, what she did was wrong, there is no doubt in that. The other shame is that all of these people judge before knowing the whole story. I agree that she must be punished, however I would like for those people listed below and anyone else out there who have never made a mistake...ever to stand up. I am not defending this woman nor what she did because clearly she was in the wrong, but have we not all been at one time or another? The only difference is that she got caught.

I can only assume she has no criminal history, or she would not have had the job. probation would ensure the victim can get restitution, she would have a felony conviction, and, probation is not a slap on the wrist, it carries pen time if you fail

Wilkins.......who said WNJ & TMC will merge? I doubt it..

Michelle Mendoza...we are so dissapointed with you! You bring shame upon every employee at WNJ! Shame on you!!! Karma sucks, remember that honey!

People these days will never learn. I hope she has to do some serious jail time for taking that kind of money and probably blew on drugs or something. Only someone on drugs could take money like that and live with themselves. Obviously she doesn't have a conscious. Thow the book at her. She deserves it.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 04:32 PM
Ah, but she WILL have a job- whatever the Texas Department of Corrections gives herwhen she goes to prison.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 04:01 PM
People these days. She needs to be punished to the full extent of the law for her actions. Kids come before money. What the hell was she thinking. I think she needs to do jail time so that she doesn't do this kind of thing again. She will never be able to find another job especially dealing with money if she finds another one after this.

WOW! What an idiot! How dumb can someone be to embezzle money from a HUGE workplace like that! People need to put thier kids before money && stupid choices these days! Good luck finding a job!

It appears WNJ dropped the ball when they made this person a supervisor.

Posted by: Harry Location: Grayson on May 7, 2008 at 09:19 AM
There seems to be a trend here. If I am not mistaken, there have been issues at WNJ before that led to charges being filed and lawsuits taking place. Perhaps WNJ needs a new batch of directors? I have thought for a long time that top admistrative staff at the hospital were being paid too much money while the worker bees were not paid enough. By the way, altering deposit slips is not a very clever way of embezzeling money. And no, I am not an employee nor do I know any employees at this hospital. All I am saying is that when administraters spend too much time trying to figure out new ways of increasing revenue, often they spend too little time in making the workplace a good place for employees to work.

Stealing monies that don't belong to her and the "baby daddy" don't work?

Posted by: wilkins Location: andy on May 7, 2008 at 07:21 AM
WNJ is nuts for not agreeing with TMC to a merger. Whats gonna happen to WNJ once TMC is completed? Would you rather go to a state of the art facility or a Medicare/Medicaid haven...? Exactly. WNJ is once again shown how incompentent they are....

Posted by: EMPLOYEE Location: SHERMAN on May 7, 2008 at 06:00 AM
So she's the reason why we have to pay for tea and coffee now!! Off with her head. LOL. Why did it take SOO long for her to get caught. I mean she was really slick, altering deposits and all!!!

Posted by: anonymous Location: sherman on May 7, 2008 at 03:01 AM
She stole our raise!!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Sherman on May 6, 2008 at 10:38 PM
You know it is actually ashame to see the comments posted about WNJ. It used to be a terrific place back in the good ole days before layers and layers of administration. You ever wonder why the cost of health care is the way it is...look at the levels of administration. When they decide to cut people, it's always at the patient care level. The only thing that will help WNJ is to dissolve the current board of directors who do nothing but profit off of the place. It has become the laughing stock of the area.

Agree!!! Not Texoma's Employer of The Year for sure!!! Think more about employees, make directors be more involved with their department and its work load. Not to mention the pay wages are a JOKE!! That might be why she had to take the money...to feed her babies!!LOL!!!

I must say, I am really surprised by this, I hope they throw the book at this person, I think jail time would be the best thing to happen here, to send a message that this crime will not be taken lightly. You have to set examples somewhere, so why not here? You can almost bet that this person will just get a slap on the wrist and led out. times like this I hate to say the Justice systems in the US will fail. This person will get probation and walk out of the room free! A few years in a state prison would be the way to send a message to any one who would dare commit this type of crime.

it would probably be easier to keep track of and to check on employees if every supervisor had some responsibilty besides going to endless meetings to create more/new work for the employees that actually do some work there. every employee of wnj knows that every day their bosses are in meetings eating doughnuts and rinking coffee and trying to figure out ways to make them/hospital more money and the nurses keep getting more and more paperwork shoved on them, it would be nice if the supervisors actually thought of their patients and employees occasionaly instead of trying to increase their own salaries, lol and just a thought but how many times does embezzlement have to happen before the board of directors or somebody with the power to change things starts at the top and cleans hopuse ???
