SHERMAN, TX- -They protect and serve communities across the nation, but this week we stop to honor them.

We're talking about law enforcement officers. This is the 20th Annual National Police Week, where we honor the sacrifice and service of everyone in the law enforcement community.

Grayson County Sheriff Keith Gary says they put their lives on the line everyday because it’s just what they do.

"It's nice to know we are appreciated. We don't expect it, that doesn't go along with the job. But it's kind of nice when you are set aside a week to be honored."

Memorials are also set up this week to honor fallen officers who died in the line of duty.

The sad and shaming fact is that MOST citizens want nothing to do with law enforcement and choose to bad-mouth them until something bad happens to them or their families. Then they expect law enforcement to "take care of business" - and of course they do. But when it's taken care of, the citizens go back to wanting nothing to with law enforcement. They are sort of like the red-headed step-children. I applaud all law enforcement. They certainly don't do it for the money! All who are close to the officers know that!

"officer's mrs" I am so glad you got the first spot on the comments. I agree with you totally. Everyone hates the police but when a tragedy happens they call the police first to save their day. The police has to deal with so many scum buckets. They don't get paid near enough with what they have to put up with and try to keep us safe. I'm not a police wife but do have friends that are. "Thanks to the Police"

No smart remarks here... My family has a long line of police in it, and a lot of my friends are officers also. And I agree with officer's mrs, one week isnt enough time to recognize these guys for their hard work.

Officer's Mrs, you said it perfectly. If everyone realized just exactly what our halves go though on any given shift I think a whole lot more people would respect them instead of put them down. I pray at the beginning of every shift that mine will make it home to me at the end of the day and not have to give the greatest sacrifice (that he as an officer and us as his family are willing to make) for the ones who don't even appreciate what they do. It's not just a job. We appreciate all of you, it doesn't matter what agency you work for, Thank you!

Well none of those descriptions fit me. I just hate cops who act like jerks and think they're God walking or riding down the street.

Thank you, officers, for doing what you do, day in and day out. If the average citizen only knew HALF the stories my husband tells me concerning what happened that day on his shift, I think many would agree that a weeks worth of recognition is just a drop in the bucket compared to what is really deserved. The only people that may not agree with me are the speeders that got a ticket(for breaking the law) or the crack-heads that went to jail(for breaking the law)the "gang bangers" that get picked up(for breaking the law) or the murderers who got caught(breaking the law)... are you starting to see a pattern? So, again, thank to all of you who strap on a bullet proof vest and gun, kiss their spouse and kids good bye, and go to work without knowing for sure if they will ever make it back home. *special thanks to CCSO deputies... I'm kind of partial to y'all! Good job and keep safe* OK law breakers, go ahead and post your smart remarks because YOU GOT CAUGHT!(& they'll get ya again :)
