GAINESVILLE, Tex. -- Trains carry tons of materials all across the country, but as Emi FitzGerald tells us, the crossing arms that stand as protection are often ignored by the public.

Gainesville police, along with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Patrol the crossing gates.

Rail officials say the trains’ speeds can be deceiving. They are often traveling much faster than they seem.

Trains run through Gainesville several times day. And authorities say minding the crossing gates could potentially save your life.

Once the red lights start flashing, drivers are supposed to stop even if the arms have not come down.

Train crews say they see people ignore the crossings everyday and have seen too many tragic accidents.

"The crews see people driving around the gates, and there's a feeling of helplessness because there's nothing they can do," Overholt says.

Authorities say even if there aren't gates at an intersection, a person is supposed to stop, look, and listen, because there could still be a train coming.

To anonymous who hates to wait at crossings....... quit yer whining and start out earlier. You're not the only one who works long hours- whadaya want, a medal or a lollypop? If there are other folks behind you who don't have the common sense to move & go to another crossing, that's on them.

I think I would rather do that than be killed from a train because you didn't care to stop and wait

And get 1/2 hour less sleep each night (after working a 14-hour shift the day before) and sitting around the store for an extra 1/2 hour, unpaid? Maybe customers should really just stop being so demanding and impatient...

Anonymous at 1:40 yes you need to leave your house early so you can get your store opened up that would probably be the smart thing to do

What does it matter if there are other crossings around when you've got several cars behind you... how in the heck are you supposed to get out? And there's nothing like trying to get to work on time in the morning and getting stuck at some crossing for 20-30 minutes, then you go to open the store you work at and angry customers are standing outside waiting, threatening to call your manager and have you fired because you weren't at work on time. Are we supposed to leave 30 minutes early every day to get to work on the very small chance that there might be a train stopped at the crossing?

Before you start yelling, if you read the comment they are asking, "Are there no other crossings??" there is a question mark at the end of this sentence you are refering too. Loose the attitude

I know people think it is the actual guys on the train that causes the delays in moving the trains. It's not, they are told what to do by a dispatcher that is located in Fort Worth. If that dispatcher will not let then move the train they can't move it or they could be fired. So please have some patience with the guys on the train because believe me they do not like sitting there anymore than you like them there.

Bobby is right! I have been detained for up to 33 minutes with just the engine blocking the highway for a crew change. This blocks all emergency traffic on Hwy 199 east and Hwy 377 north.

The conductor and the engineer of the trains are at the mercy of the control tower..so dont blame them

Bobby which is more important, Your life or trying to beat the train and get killed. I say waiting a little while for the train to cross is better than ending up on the dead side.

Its called having patience people and unless you want this train to hit and kill you or someone else you better sit there and wait on it

Posted by: Anonymous on May 14, 2008 at 10:41 PM
ANd there are no other grade crossings in Madill?

Posted by: bobby Location: madill okla. on May 14, 2008 at 09:20 PM
you think sherman trains are bad you should try the one in madill okla its nothing to sit and wait 30 min with only one train car keeping the arm down its no wonder people try to get over the tracks as fast as thay can ther should be something done about the train not the people trying to get to work or home

Posted by: Anonymous on May 14, 2008 at 07:17 PM
I'd never try and beat a train, but it's dadgum frustrating when it takes 10-15 minutes for the train to pass (like it often does in Sherman or Denison).
