11-3-05 - Thursday is a red flag fire day meaning there is a serious potential for grass fires. Already Thursday morning, a grass fire near Calera shows us just how serious the warning is.
Calera and Achille firefighters fought a fire starting around 9:00 a.m. Thursday, and by noon, the smoke just began clearly in the field.
Approximately two acres burned including more than twenty boats that were sitting on the property. The owner says he was on his bulldozer when the wench became too hot catching the grass on fire. He immediately called 911.
It didn't take long at all for the fire to spread across his backyard destroying several of the man's boats, but it could have been worse. His home and a work shed were close by.
Two ingredients put the fire department on alert all over Texoma: increased wind and the an extremely dry ground. The low humidity adds a third dangerous factor when mixed with the winds.
