11-13-05 – Ardmore celebrated the 100th birthday of an historic building Sunday. The Ardmore Garden Center has braved tornados and time, but is still standing decades after it was built.
The club was once Ardmore’s first library. It was opened in 1906, but was nearly destroyed by a tornado in the 1920s. The twister knocked out its second floor, but the building was reopened as a one-story.
The building was given a face-lift after a recent $20,000 grant from the Noble Foundation. On Sunday, the center held a centennial celebration.
The mayor also declared November 13th as Arline Guthery day. She is one of the last-living members of the Ardmore Pansy Club which held meetings at the Garden Center.
