SADLER, Tex. -- The Sadler Volunteer Fire Department is asking for volunteers because the future of the group is up in the air.

Assistant fire chief Dennis Deckard says they currently have eight volunteers, but because of conflicting schedules during emergencies they sometimes have as little as one or two people responding to the scene.

Deckard says the department is operating under a $30,000 budget and would like to have 15 firefighters that they could call in case something does happen, because relying on other departments like Whitesboro and Gordonville is not a long-term solution.

"We occasionally respond and help them out as well and we greatly appreciate that help, but we would like to adequately staff our own equipment," Deckard says.

Deckard says a community meeting to discuss the future of the department could be happening in the next couple of months.

John(Dallas), you unintentionally nailed it...what's wrong with my community, your city, our nation? Folks aren't interested in giving back. They ask, "What's in it for me?" The reality is that 90 % of all firefighters are volunteer, and folks like you don't get that. There are no ten-percenters in Sadler, TX. Ya'll just like to think that someone is coming when you dial 911. Thanks to "Rescue 911", with host Bill Shatner, folks think it is a given that you will be rescued in time...just dial 911, heck, maybe they'll beam you up. That is a nice thought. I see an opportunity to give and get at the same time... I want for my wife, when she has an auto accident to get a timely response to that 911 call. Someone will come, but will the response be timely and adequate? Try serving someone else, instead of your own selfish ambition, you might be surprised what is in it for you. Thanks to all of you who do.

Yep, I made time in my busy day to do this interview...glad we had not fire calls. Thanks for the good coverage, Daniel. Sadler VFD provides fire and emergency response to a 40 sq. mile area on the west side of Grayson county. We greatly depend on automatic mutual aid from Whitesboro, Gordonville, Collinsville, Southmayd and more of our neighboring agencies, and try to return that welcomed favor. We always need money, but we are currently desperately short on people, both as firefighters and board trustees for our non-profit organization. Also needed are, event planners for fundraising efforts. We are fairly well equipped with fire apparatus, but are lacking in some key areas, such as SCBAs, PPE, voice pagers, etc...needs to be met with grants and money. Interested in helping? You know I think that it is really sad for all that the departments do that you can't see past some things.I guess that is what the world has come to.I am telling you this by experience I am a female and a former volunteer for the southmayd volunteer fire dept I was firefighter of the year and the dept had alot of politics going on in it while I was there I can promise you and so called back biting but you have to be in it for all the right reasons to help a community cause the ones that are doing that it will catch up to them they will be accountable for their actions soon.I think as far as people's schedules yes we are all busy these days but I can tell you and it is just my opinion if it was my house that was on fire or my children that needed saving I am sure that those thoughts would be different.It is not a full time job you don't have to go to every call it is VOLUNTEER.I am not trying to be mean and I would be on it if my health would allow!hats off to them and good Luck to you!

Most people's schedules are so full anymore that people don't have time to volunteer for anything. Good luck!

This is also what happens when more emphasis is placed on pleasing board members than on firefighter safety or for that matter public safety.

This is what happens when there is back biting and gossip within the department. Yes, we have conflicting schedules. And ideas, apparently.
