Friends Remember Accident Victims

11-18-05 - A head-on accident Wednesday night killed a Calera teenager and an elderly driver from Mead. It happened at 6:25 pm on SH 70 at the east end of the Roosevelt bridge when a pick-up crossed the center line and hit a van head-on.

The 1986 Chevy pick-up, carrying 17-year-old Misty Heath, rolled and then burst into flames. She was trapped for two hours and died at the scene.

The driver of a 2005 Chrysler van, 72-year-old Donna Hughes, also died at the scene of massive injuries. A 3rd vehicle hit the van after the initial collision. That driver, also of Mead, refused treatment at the scene.

State troopers say the westbound Chevy pick-up drove left of center just before it reached the bridge and hit the van head-on.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation rerouted traffic on an alternate route of SH-199 between Madill and Durant for 3.5 hours.
