11-21-05 - A Former Sherman Police Lieutenant was sentenced to 97 months in prison after pleading guilty to possession of obscene material in April.
Todd Smithers’ sentencing occurred on Monday, and he remains in the Hunt County Jail where he has been since Wednesday after violating a term of his pre-trial release agreement. Smithers checked himself out of the Saunte Center on October 29th, and he was supposed to stay there until sentencing.
The defense called expert witnesses trying to convince the jury to deal Smithers a lighter sentence including the Saunte Center Medical Director who said if Smithers continues treatment then he will get better.
KXII also learned that Smithers violated treatment rules when he had sexual encounters with two women.
An investigation uncovered visual depictions of minors engaging in sex acts on his computer. No fines were handed down, and Smithers could have gotten up to ten years in jail. Smithers can appeal the decision.
