2 Oklahoma school districts get F under new system

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Two of Oklahoma's 526 school districts received an "F'' grade under the state's new grading system.

Farris Public Schools in Atoka County and Dustin Public Schools in Hughes County were given F's in the first report under the system.

State Department of Education spokeswoman Tricia Pemberton told The Oklahoman that the Farris district failed because it failed to give state-mandated tests to at least 90 percent of its students. The district otherwise scored well enough to have received a B.

Pemberton says failing to test at least 90 percent of students results in automatic failure.

She says the Dustin district failed in all performance areas - including math and reading, student improvement and the graduation rate.

The superintendents of the two districts did not return phone calls for comment.
