Teacher, Youth Counselor Charged With Growing Marijuana

12-1-05 - A Broken Arrow elementary school teacher and her youth counselor husband are facing four drug counts in connection with an indoor marijuana growing operation.

Rebecca "Becky" Ann Meador, 33, and Robert Lee Meador, 35, were charged Wednesday in Tulsa County District Court with cultivation of marijuana, unlawful possession of marijuana with an intent to distribute, failure to obtain a drug tax stamp, and possession of paraphernalia.

Robert Meador was arrested last week and Rebecca Meador was arrested Monday after a search by Broken Arrow police reportedly turned up 33 adult marijuana plants and 13 smaller plants under grow-lights with irrigation and plant food, hallucinogenic mushrooms, several weapons and assorted paraphernalia in their house and in a shed on their property.

Both have since been released from the Tulsa Jail on bond.

Rebecca Meador has worked for Broken Arrow Public Schools as a fifth-grade teacher since August 2002. She was suspended with pay after her arrest.

Keith Isbell, a spokesman for the district, said Meador was named Teacher of the Year at Park Lane Elementary School just a month ago.

According to the district's Web site, she earned National Board Certification in 2003.

National Board Certification complements state licensing by establishing advanced standards for experienced teachers. Oklahoma teachers receive a $5,000 stipend each year if they are certificated.

District teachers don't take drug tests upon hiring, Isbell said.

Robert Meador has worked for the Shadow Mountain Behavioral Health System for several years as a counselor treating children and teenagers with emotional and behavioral problems on an outpatient basis.

Elicia Bunch, associate administrator for Shadow Mountain, said Robert Meador has been suspended and that an internal investigation is being conducted.

"We are absolutely shocked and very disappointed and saddened at the charges," Bunch said. "This is certainly not the kind of conduct we would want portrayed by any of our employees."
