Hugo Eyes New School Plans

12-9-05 - It's 85 years old, and it's hard to walk down the halls without feeling its history. But the school district says it's time for something new. They are asking for voters to approve a bond issue that would move them into another building at the beginning of the 2007 school year, a 62,000 square foot facility with more classrooms, a bigger gymnasium, and more parking at the corner of highways 70 and 93.

But that's a location that sits right on the city limit line, and that worries some that think if the city moves the school there, they'll lose one of their main anchors from the downtown area. And although it is aging, opponents to the bond say the current high school is still an adequate building.

Burden of cost in this proposed project would be paid off by an increase in taxes for property owners. If the bond passes, the school district says it could eventually lead to the additional construction of new athletic fields as well.

That bond election will be held this Tuesday. Polls are open from seven in the morning to seven at night.
