Hugo School Bond Soundly Defeated

12-14-05 - A school bond election in Hugo was soundly defeated Tuesday night. Out of 1,592 voters, only 18% said yes. The $6.5 million bond to build a new high school needed at least 60% to pass.

Under 70 people voted in the rural Johnston County town of Wapanucka. Voters were deciding three seperate propositions that would raise sales taxes.

Proposition 1, for the general fund, finished in a 34 to 34 tie. Proposition 2, to help the fire department keep up with truck maintenance and boost its budget, failed 30 to 35. Proposition 3, for the police department to hire a full-time officer, also a vote of 27 to 38.

Two measures did pass - Pontotoc and Bryan County voters said yes to a 50 cent cell phone surcharge. The per-month fee would make sure 911 service pinpoints cell phone signals to help speed emergency responders.
