12-16-05 - For 23 years, Hench's Homes has stood at the intersection of Hwy 56 and 289 in Southmayd, catching customers who pass by, looking for a manufactured home. And with the approval of a state highway expansion, this family business will be seeing some changes.
Three months ago, negotiations began with landowners for the two lane thoroughfare, connecting travelers from the Metroplex with the north part of the county. Yesterday local officials and law makers met in Austin and got the word: $85 million from the Texas Transportation Commission to fund the roadway.
With talk of connecting this road with the Dallas Tollway and even Highway 75, it's simply the next bridge for growth in Grayson County.
We spoke with neighbors, and some Southmayd city councilmen who live just down the street from here. They say the expansion will not only lighten travel on these roads but will bring more money into their town.
The project could expand from two to four lanes as construction progresses. It's estimated to take two and a half years to complete.
