OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - State Senator Jeff Rabon is renewing his
call for a special session to aid rural fire departments. Rabon, a Democrat from Hugo, says rural fire departments have exhausted their resources by battling fires in drought conditions in recent weeks.
Fires whipped by 40 mile-per-hour winds hit 17 counties yesterday after raking large areas of eastern and southern Oklahoma a few weeks ago.
Rabon says lawmakers should act now and not wait until the regular legislative session that begins February 6th. He also says Governor Henry should consider using the National Guard to protect the property of rural Oklahomans.
He says lawmakers should ast quickly before the situation becomes even more desperate for our rural fire departments.
