Roads will remain treacherous from snow and sleet until mid-day, when sunshine should melt most of it away. Snow is likely to remain on the ground until Friday.
1-25-06 - Oklahoma state democrats are proposing a tax-free weekend again this year, but local lawmakers say southern Oklahoma may have the most to gain.
Oklahoma senators Jay Paul Gumm, Johnnie Crutchfield and Mike Morgan introduced the plan in Durant. Senator Gumm, who authored the bill, says there is no greater economic issue than local shoppers traveling to Texas. The Lone Star state has offered a tax-free weekend every August for several years now.
The proposed Oklahoma weekend would be on the same days and include the same items. Sponsors hope it would eliminate almost every reason sooner shoppers have for crossing the border.
But the tax free idea has met opposition from lawmakers in Oklahoma City. They say the loss of up to $4.7 million in tax revenue is too great. Similar measures have failed in the past.
