2-10-06- Federal cuts coming to Science Research Centers could affect the one in Atoka County. The Lane Research Center that houses the Oklahoma State University and USDA Labs opened up in 1983 when OSU purchased the 280-acre piece of land and the United States Department of Agriculture planted the lab facilities.
They are known worldwide for their investigation of a range of fruits and vegetables. But a with President Bush’s 2007 budget proposal containing restrictions that would shut down 27 research center, their research could be coming to an end. The center pours about $3 million dollars into Atoka, Bryan, and Pushmataha Counties each year.
If the government shuts down the USDA side of the lab, it will have a major effect on OSU’s agriculture research.
