2-23-06- A Bryan County commissioner resigned and his road foreman are resigned as part of a deal to have charges against them dropped. District 3 Commissioner John Spence has been under investigation by District 20 officials for over a month for the misuse of funds.
Johnston County Assistant District Attorney Charles Miglorino presented Spence with the information that would warrant 14 counts of embezzlement. Investigators say county-owned road graders, dump trucks, and backhoes were used by county employees to build roads and install drainage pipes on private property. Although the allegations do not involve any money taken, Spence will be required to pay back money for the misuse.
With the resignation of Spence, Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry will call for a special election, or the remaining two commissioners will handle business until the next election.
Spence occupied the District 3 position since May. He won the special election after the death of commissioner Sonny Hart in late March.
