2-20-06- A jury in McKinney Wednesday began deliberations in the capital murder trial of a woman accused in the dismemberment death of her baby.
Dena Schlosser of Plano has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the November 2004 death of the infant, whose arms were cut off. A prosecutor Wednesday displayed a bloody knife and crime scene photos as part of closing arguments.
But defense attorney Bill Schultz told jurors that "the only way for the system to work is for the jury to do the right thing and look at the evidence." He pointed to the findings of psychiatrists that the woman was insane, and said she had no motive to kill baby Maggie.
Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty against Schlosser. The defense wants her committed to a state mental hospital, but prosecutors are seeking a life sentence.
