3-2-06 - Supporters say the approval of the USA Patriot Act has been a long time coming and will make the country safer while protecting privacy. The Senate has overwhelmingly voted to renew the anti-terror legislation.
The 89-10 vote culminates a lengthy fight in the Senate over balancing the investigative needs of the government with civil liberties. Opponents say the bill falls short, and does not do enough to protect civil liberties during terror investigations.
The House is expected to approve the bill early next week, sending it to President Bush for his signature. The current bill, which has been extended twice, expires next Friday.
