3-3-06 - Firefighters in Oklahoma battled a blaze in Johnston County Friday afternoon that shut down part of an Oklahoma highway. At around 11:00 a.m. Friday, firefighters in Bromide were called out to a grassfire just to the north of State Highway 7, but not long after the fire crossed the highway and started to ignite a heavily wooded area.
The Bromide Fire Department was the first on the scene, but firefighters were called in from all over Johnston County to assist on the blaze. The fire started on the north side of the highway and northerly winds pushed the fire and a heavy amount of smoke across the highway, temporarily shutting down traffic. The smoke was so thick that one driver failed to see a fire truck parked on the road and rear-ended it.
Air support arrived on scene around 1:00 p.m. and firefighters were able to get a better handle on the fire as the day progressed. Officials have not yet pinpointed what started the blaze.
