3-4-06 - PENTAGON (AP) - The Army says it will launch a criminal investigation into the April 2004 shooting death in Afghanistan of former professional football player Pat Tillman.
Tillman, who played four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, was killed by fellow soldiers in what previous Army reviews have concluded was an accidental shooting by members of his unit.
A spokesman says the office of the Pentagon's inspector general has reviewed the matter at the Army's request and concluded that a criminal probe is warranted.
The Army Criminal Investigation Command will conduct the probe.
One Pentagon official says it would focus on possible charges of negligent homicide.
Members of the Tillman family have been notified.
