3-17-06 - A mixture of rain and sleet fell across much of the wildfire-blackened Texas Panhandle Friday. The wet conditions are providing some relief to the drought-stricken region.
Firefighters hope the weather will help their battle against wildfires that have killed at least eleven people and thousands of head of livestock. The National Weather Service predicts wet conditions would continue through the weekend. Wildfires since last Sunday have consumed 840,000 acres and forced thousands to evacuate.
Governor Rick Perry took an aerial tour of the region yesterday and he says the losses are "staggering."
