Bryan County Inmate Recaptured

3-31-06 - An inmate who was accidentally released from the Bryan County Jail Thursday morning is back behind bars.

Late Thursday night, state troopers located a vehicle driven by Jason Wayne Payne parked in the parking lot of a Hugo Motel. Troopers of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Investigations Division and members of the US Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force took the suspect and his wife into custody at 11pm.

Payne was arrested Wednesday after leading Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers on a chase that ended in gunfire near Kenefic. In the process, he also rammed a patrol car with his vehicle. Payne was mistakenly released late Wednesday night. According to the OHP, the booking trooper requested a hold for "warrants" in addition to the traffic charges. But the OHP claims the Jail Trust Authority released him on traffic bond without checking further on the "warrants" hold.

But an administrator with the jail says it wasn't there mistake - just a miscommunication.

Payne's wife was placed in the Choctaw County jail in Hugo on stolen property, drug, and harboring a fugitive charges.

Payne is back in the Bryan County Jail with a hold placed for felony assault and battery, felony eluding, dui and failure to appear warrants from Bryan County district court; and a fugitive hold for Alabama burglary and stolen property charges.
