FANNIN COUNTY, Tex. -- A Denison man is dead after an early morning accident in Fannin County. It happened just after 5 a.m. at the intersection of State Highway 78 and County Road 2006 approximately 8 miles north of Bonham.

Troopers say 43-year-old Robert Baker, of Denison, was delivering newspapers heading southbound on the highway with his hazard lights on when he tried to turn left onto the county road when an 18-wheeler tried to pass him. Baker was hit on the driver’s side by the freight-liner, killing him on impact.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

To the one that says truckers suck still waiting on your e-mail or place to meet, and to the one that the truck traveling 72 mph the trucks at alan richie are governed at 67 mph.

After reading the article in the newspaper, I am at a loss. I have read the comments and would like to know exactly what happened. People are assuming too many things. Last I heard an investigation was pending. Anyone know the outcome? Lets not blame until we know the full story. It is always sad when a life is lost. But why is it we never hear the outcome of terrible stories such as this. Maybe the news station should do a follow up.

To Robert's Aunt, I agree. I did not know Robert but I think your message is great. I lost my brother when he was hit by a truck but I did not blame the trucker, it was not his fault, it was an accident. I would not want to be in their shoes. It sounds like Robert was a great guy and he went home to be with the Lord. Find strength in knownig that, God Bless.

RIP Robert. Prayers for everyone involved. Why does everyone jump to conclusions on here? Maybe I should pray for some of you people too...

I too worked alongside Robert at New Life Church (now Covenant Church). I agree that Robert served the church with his whole heart. We had such a loving, caring place to worship and love God back then. Robert loved this. I remember how hard Robert would work to help with sound and anything else in the church. He also worked with Daryl Minor of God Productions. I think that is Daryl who posted down below here. Robert went through a lot back then and I know how Pastor Mike, Bud Leavell and all of those at the church just loved him and helped him through it. Robert would not want anyone to be pointing fingers regarding all of this. That wasn't who he was. I think that truck drivers intimidate a lot of people because of the sheer size of their vehicles and dominating presence on the road. The drivers have schedules to meet. It is their job. It is how they feed their families. I don't believe that any truck driver is out there to harm anyone. Just my opinion.

My heart goes out to both families. For all of you that is downing truck drivers, not all of them are that way. People in cars think that a big truck can stop on a dime. Well they can't. I owned my own trucking company and we had so many people to pull out in front of us and luckly no one was hurt. Most trucks will not go over 72 like the other person was saying. People in the other cars need to watch what they are doing. I can say this.. Your not going to die unless it's your time.

I volunteered with Robert at New Life Church several years ago. He was a kind and good hearted man. Very likable and very good hearted. He was very fulfilled in serving in that church. Pastor Mike Murphy told me once that he knew that he could always count on Robert to do anything that needed to be done. Robert served with joy and expected nothing from anyone. Robert worked with the Epplers for several Easter (and on other holidays) outreaches. I knew that Robert loved the church, loved Pastor Mike and definitely loved God. He really connected with Pastor Mike because they were both so real and down to earth with a genuine love for God and people. We've lost a very good man. I think that every one of us could be more attentive in our driving habits but there is no one to blame here. Robert is in heaven. He loved God and is now in a place where he can be with God. We will miss him and always bless this wonderful man's memory in our hearts and our thoughts.

Dear True,You need to drive Highway 35 a few times. There are many trucks that exceed the speed limit and there are many that pass other vehicles unsafely. So where is this device that governs their speed? I was rear ended on 75 several months ago and he proceeded to leave the scene. This doesnt make them all bad,but it doesnt make this loss any easier either. Regardless of how it happened,a man is dead and another driver has that to love with. And no one will be the same. Our prayers are with all affected.

Typical...instead of this being a tragic ACCIDENT, folks have to have someone to blame. I'm sure the driver woke up this morning an thought "I think am going to take a life today." I guess we can start the countdown on when the family is going to sue the company.

They drive ridiculously, 90% of them. They suck! Male or female.......truck drivers suck! They think they are tough until they get behind me and I get em slowed down, it's the only way to get them under control. Oh yeah...1 more thing.....TRUCK DRIVERS SUCK!

Where does it say the truck was speeding, or even driving in a reckless manner? You guys are reading what you want into this story. My prayers go to the family of both the drivers. All of you that are being very rude to the driver, shame on you. You were not there. It is a horrible accident. To a caring person- did you know that most trucks do not even have the abilty to speed? Alot of the have a device put on the so they cannot go over 72 MPH. Also, I work with Drivers daily and I can tell you most of these guys are safer in the trucks they drive that you are in your car. Im wondering..If you guys were put into the same position would you not have passed this person as well? I know that I have done this myself, if there is a slow driver in my lane, thier flashers on, and no oncoming traffic. I believe there is no one to blame here, accidents happen. Like I said before my prayers are with the familys at this time.

IT IS TRULY SAD THAT ROBERT LOST HIS LIFE. HOWEVER I KNOW THAT THE TRUCK DRIVER WAS NOT SPEEDING. MOST TRUCKS ARE EQUIPPED WITH A COMPUTER THAT DOES NOT LET THE DRIVER GO ABOVE THE SPEED LIMIT OF 65 MILES PER HOUR TO CONSERVE ON GAS AND OTHER REASONS. THE TRUCK DRIVER WAS IN A PASSING ZONE AND ROBERT WAS ON THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY AND MADE A SUDDEN LEFT TURN. IT IS ONE OF THOSE TERRIBLE ACCIDENTS THAT HAPPEN IN LIFE AND I AM SURE THE TRUCK DRIVER WOULD CHANGE IT IF THEY COULD. LETS REMEMBER TWO FAMILYS ARE CHANGED FOREVER AND WE NEED TO LET THEM GRIEVE IN PEACE!! SAYING THE TRUCK DRIVER NEEDS TO GO TO JAIL AND TAKING REVENGE OUT ON THE COMPANY THAT OWNS THE TRUCK WILL NOT BRING ROBERT BACK. IT WAS TRULY AN ACCIDENT AND LETS ASK OURSELVES IF IT WERE AN ORDINARY TRUCK OR CAR WOULD THERE BE THIS MAJOR OUTCRY FROM THE PUBLIC? I DON'T THINK SO. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A SAD STORY AND THEN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN BY EVERYONE BUT ROBERT'S FAMILY!!

it is not always the truck drivers fault in an accident. remember they have as much right on the highway as cars do so remember make sure you are willing to do your part to keep the roads safe car drivers i have seen a lot of people turn in front of trucks no signal pull out in front of trucks so don't always blame the TRUCK DRIVERS THE ARE TRAINED TO BE SAFE ARE YOU???????????

WELL,I LIVE IN A LARGE COMMUNITY AND I'M HERE TO TELL YOU THAT TRUCKERS THAT ARE"DODGING BETWEEN PEOPLE...DRIVING SLOWER THAN THE SPEED LIMIT" SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO DRIVE. IF A TRUCK WEIGHS 80,000 LBS. AND YOU'RE WEAVING THRU PEOPLE YOU ARE AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN.AS FAR AS THIS ACCIDENT IS CONCERNED,WHERE ,YES,A REMARKABLE YOUNG MAN WAS KILLED.THE HIWAY IS FLAT AND STRAIGHT. IF YOU SEE CAUTION LIGHTS,YOU SLOW DOWN .YOU DRIVE CAUTIOUSLY.ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE CARRYING 80,000 LBS.WHAT HAPPENED TO DRIVING DEFENSIVELY? ALTHOUGH I DO FEEL BAD FOR THE LADY THAT WAS DRIVING THE TRUCK,IT'S A HORRIBLE MEMORY TO HAVE TO LIVE WITH,I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK,BUT FOR A MOMENT OF "CAUTION"..MY COUSIN WOULD STILL BE HERE WITH HIS PARENTS AND HIS WIFE ENJOYING HIS LIFE TO THE FULLEST... WE MISS YOU ROBBY..LOVE YOU.

i think these .rude remarks are realy un called for and before you make them... you need to think about how fast this truck driver was going ....she had to be speeding ..... so as for my self i intend to start in austin to get laws past on the 18 wheelers seems to me if she had not been speeding she might have been able to slow down enough that it might not have killed him .... also hazard lights you are suppose to ....SLOW....DOWN ....I WOULD THINK IF SHE HAD BEEN LOOKING GOOD SHE WOULD HAVE SEEN THOSE HAZARD LIGHTS LONG BEFORE SHE HIT HIM ...

Posted by: A CARING PERSON Location: SHERMAN on Jul 21, 2008 at 10:26 PM
I UNDERSTAND TRUCKERS CANT STOP ON A DIME BUT I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT THAY SHOULD NOT BE SPEEDING, N IM SO SORRY BUT I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THE TRUCK DRIVERS FAMILY IS AS (DVISTATED) AS ROBERTS FAMILY THE TRUCK DRIVER IS STILL LIVING IM SURE THE FAMILY OF ROBERT WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO SAY HE WAS STILL LIVING!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 21, 2008 at 07:05 PM
CAROL location PLANO,were you the driver, the driver should be charged and put in jail,

Posted by: Carol Location: Plano on Jul 20, 2008 at 06:17 PM
I am sure that your community has lost a remarkable man in this accident.. But to thoes of you who have made the rude and negative remarks about the truck driver need to understand she was driving a truck that weighed 80,000 lbs. and you must remember that Robert didn't start out that morning intending to kill or be killed on the highway. Neighter did the other driver. Please be reminded that there are two families involoved in this incident and both deserve our consideration. If you lived in a large community like I do you would certainly realize how dangerous it is for these truckers to be on the road with people that don't know or care about the responsibility the drivers of these trucks have dodging between people who are driving slower than the speed limit. So please think twice before you have to go before your maker and answer for your unknowing and rude behavior and remarks.

I knew Robert years ago, he was a really nice guy and taught me alot about computers. I was in shock when I heard about this. Such a shame that people are taken from the world before its their time. My thoughts go out to the family and friends.

Our family have been friends with Robby and his family for a long time. You will be missed by all your friends. You had a very kind heart and a giving spirit. We will always be there for his family.

The story said that Robert had his hazard lights on and tried to make a left turn. He should have turned off the hazards and turned his left signal on. The trucker had no idea Robert was going to turn left. The trucker just saw a slow moving vehicle, and tried to pass when Robert turned if front of him. My prayers go out to Roberts family, but its not always the truckers fault. They can't stop on a dime.

The world just lost a very good person. I worked with Robert at LTD. My sympathy to his family.

I feel so sorry for the family that lost Robert Baker, but on another note I totally agree that these truck drivers need to be held 100% responsible for thier careless actions. They do not care who they hurt they think they can control the roads. I say it is time we put a stop to all the killing that is being done at the hands of 18-wheelers. I hope that driver gets what they deserve

These trucks going up and down 78 and 121 drive too fast and don't yield for anything. I've seen too many near disasters with these 18 wheelers. Feel bad for the family and hope the driver and company get nailed, criminally and financially. That's the only way to get these drivers to drive the speed limit and be safe. I live off Hwy 78 and have to deal with bad truck drivers everyday!
