Citizen Shoots Paris Bank Robber

4-7-06 - A bank robbery in Paris Thursday sent authorities on a 5-hour manhunt until a citizen caught the suspect by shooting him in the leg.

Around 4:30 p.m. a man walked into the lobby of the People’s National Bank on Lamar Street, walked up to the teller, and demanded money. Security cameras captured images of the suspect, 32-year old Michael Hammonds as he took more than $14,000 in cash.

Hammonds then ran out the front door and got away in a pickup truck driven by his girlfriend, 26-year p; Robyn Bradford and headed south. A DPS trooper caught up with the couple on FM 1497, but then lost the suspects when they bailed out of the car and into the woods.

Around 11:00 p.m. authorities received a 911 call from a house on FM 1498 that the resident there had caught Hammond by shooting him in the leg. Hammonds underwent surgery for his gunshot wound Friday morning at Paris Regional Medical Center.

After he is released, he will join Bradford in the Lamar County Jail. Police say their charges will include robbery and evading arrest.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the man who shot Hammond, pending an investigation.
