Nearly one if four Oklahoma and Texas students smoke. It's a startling statistic that has these students working to help others kick the habit.
The 326 members of the Students Working Against Tobacco program in Atoka County have a message. That's why they called on the former Winston man.
Back in the early 80s Dave Goerlitz was featured in 42 campaign ads as Winston’s cigarette model. He now takes a stand against the tobacco industry.
According to the American Cancer Society, some students start smoking as early as the sixth grade .but the hope is Goerlitz testimony will make them think twice before they light up. And Atoka County Tobacco Control Coordinator Amber Gammon says she hopes programs like SWAT will helps kids quit before they ever start.
