GRAYSON CO., TX -- Budget meetings have started across Texas and in Grayson County, and the tax collector has shown the estimates for Grayson County. So what does this mean for taxpayers?
During budget hearings this week, Grayson County Commissioners have considered the requests and are funding adjustments of each county department.
The Commissioner's Court is responsible for all the budgets which ultimately affects your tax rate, said Grayson County Judge, Drue Bynum.
Your tax rate is determined by the increase or decrease in county spending. The more money spent, the higher your taxes.
The good news is, Judge Bynum says it looks like the budgets for all county departments will remain the same this year, which means your taxes should too.
Tax Assessor John Ramsey has released the effective tax rate for 2009, and this year, property taxes should fall between $.44 and $.49 per $100 of property value.
This is the effective rate this year based on new evaluation and this is the maximum rate the governing body could adopt. Without the chance of having a rollback election, the effective tax rate has been posted which shows the minimum and maximum so the tax rate will come somewhere between there., said Ramsey.
After commissioners complete all the budget hearings, they will formulate a rate that will fund the tax portion of the budget.
I can pretty well tell you that we are not going to raise taxes. To do that there's a lot of work. Everybody comes in wanting certain things and having a lot of justifications. At the end of the day, it is the goal of this commission to not raise your tax rate at all, said Bynum.
That rate is expected to be released with the proposed budget on September 1, and a final budget expected to be adopted by commissioners by October 1.
Keep in mind, this isn't taking into account other taxing agencies in your area, for example schools and colleges. Your rate may differ depending on where you live in Grayson County, and your rate will also vary if you live outside of Grayson.
