4-19-06 - Firefighters all over Carter County could soon be the beneficiaries of a proposed tax as long as residents countywide agree to it.
At the county fire chiefs’ meeting Tuesday night there was talk of developing a $0.25 sales tax to help local firefighters. After the previous fire season the 14 fire departments in Carter County say they need it. If passed, the yearly contribution to the county fund could be a worth a couple million dollars, which would be split among the departments.
The money would help pay for maintenance and equipment costs and then the committee assigned to the project would decide where the remaining money would go. Once the proposal is drawn up and approved by commissioners it would go to the residents of Carter County for a vote and could come as early as the July elections.
