Pawnshop Loans Rise With Gas Prices

4-20-06 - Gas prices boosted $0.04 overnight and as they change some Texomans are changing their spending habits to afford the precious commodity.

Pawnshops in the area are popular for quick cash loans, and the high gas prices at the pump mean more people are coming in and taking extra measures to cope with the increase. For Sherman residents Charles Chadwick and Ernest Wysong, of all things, paying for gas means parting with an electric scooter. But they are not alone as dozens have descended upon Wild West Pawn on Houston Street in Sherman Thursday, bringing in collateral such as jewelry, VCRs, and firearms for loans.

Those who rely on driving say they need extra cash now. Gas prices are currently averaging $2.86 across the country. With fuel prices expected to be high through the summer, local merchants expect business to stay busy.
