Preston Hightower

SHERMAN, Tex. -- After nearly three weeks on the run, the man who fled a Sherman courtroom minutes after being found guilty of sexual assault of a child is now back in custody, thanks to United States Marshals and a number of other agencies.

Preston Dewayne Hightower fled the Grayson County Justice Center back on July 25 after being found guilty on three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Authorities say after the verdict, jurors went to deliberate Hightower's sentence, and Hightower asked Judge Rim Nall if he could go outside to smoke. With the help of family and friends, Hightower left, and was gone for three weeks.

Hightower was finally found and arrested in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at a roofing job site Thursday morning.

Authorities were led from Texas to Oklahoma to Arkansas in search of Hightower, and finally to South Dakota, where he was apprehended.

"We all feel relieved that a person that is charged with this amount of crime & found guilty & this type of crime is off the streets. You always worry about others victims that may come along while he's running," U.S. Marshal Deputy Kenney Abel said.

Officials say a number of Hightower’s friends and family members provided information that ultimately led to his capture. His sister, mother, nephew, and ex-girlfriend were all arrested on charges they helped Hightower elude authorities for three weeks. Authorities also say more arrests could be made.

"We want people to know that if your going to hide and help people escape, you are going to be responsible too for that criminal activity," Grayson County district attorney Joe Brown said.

Hightower has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Currently he is in a South Dakota jail but he will be transferred to the Grayson County Jail after authorities extradite him.

Hightower was scheduled to air on America's Most Wanted on Saturday night.

No wonder this county is so messed up look what kind of people think they know something. May god show you.

You folks in Grayson County are upset over nothing, at least the man did not murder a citizen while he was in South Dakota, The Sheriff and his jail Administrator over here in Bryan County, let a prisoner out of jail last may 22, 2007, that had been ordered by a judge held without bond, and he went that very day and murdered someone. Now, he is running for re-election, now this is a real dumb @@@. A 72 year old man that thinks he can supervise a Sheriffs Department. So give Rimm some slack.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 17, 2008 at 07:22 PM
The man was found guilty by a jury of 12, He was sentenced so he should have been put into custody and not let out to smoke. If he feels he is innocent than his lawyer will find a way to appeal. Running will not look good if does get a new trial.

Well shouldn't the judge be charged with aiding a criminal? After all it was his decision to let Hightower just walk out without cuffs or supervision. They want to put family members in jail for helping him, but ultimately the judge was the top player in the "help you escape" scenario!

i was wrongly accused by a lying woman like this and lost my kid over it. the system is full of innocent people & if i ever find myself in this position again, i'm running. i am not saying he is innocent or guilty, because i dont know. BUT I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT MANY MEN GET RAILROADED BY THE SYSTEM AND HAVE THEIR LIVES RUINED BY LYING WOMEN AND THE BIASED SYSTEM. in my case, i had my 9 year old daughter on 7/2/04. my summer custody started on 7/1. my LYING exwife told the DA that i had kidnapped my kid. when that INCOMPETENT POWER TRIPPING JERK Rick Reynolds came to my house, i was watching 5 kids, had no car, had no clothes packed, and had court papers showing my custody. HE STILL TOOK MY KID AWAY. i was investigated by DHS and APD. to this very day, i still dont get to see my kid; though i still pay child support. i lost her on 7/1, and they said she came home from my house 3 weeks after that and i had taken a hammer and a penis to her.WTF? WOMEN ARE LIARS AND EMOTIONAL TERRORISTS

What is your opinion about this topic: Should it be mandatory that all students athletes who participate in any sports programs at the local high school must have a drug test? Meaning that every single and potential player that would like to participate in school-sports activities should be discourage from making inappropriate choices regarding the use of illicit drugs. A further positive outcome for a program like this one, is to identify those students who, having made a poor choice, need help in understanding the dangers of using/abusing illegal substances and who need help in divesting themselves of a potentially serious problem. According to the National Drug Control Policy, Texas is one of 20 states receiving the grants, which total $5.8 million nationwide, from the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy and the U.S. Department of Education. Then why Denison/Sherman Schools do not have a Drug Policy in place yet?

I DO NOT DEFEND THIS MAN'S INNOCENCE. IF HE IS GUILTY THEN HE SHOULD NOT BE WALKING THE STREETS. IF HE IS INNOCENT HE SHOULD NOT BE BEHIND BARS. I AM JUST SAYING NO ONE SHOULD BE JUDGEMENTAL. THERE IS ONLY ONE PERSON THAT CAN JUDGE HIM AND THAT IS GOD. SO I THINK EVERYONE SHOULD LET IT BE AND LET GOD TAKE CARE OF IT.

How could the Judge be so NEGLIGENT.

seems like Grayson County has a little problem with bail jumpers.

Do you people know the whole truth before you go on judging. I'm not saying that he didn't do it, but if you don't know then you all need to keep your comments to yourself. How many people have they let out after serving time for the assult that they were charged with and come to find out they didn't do? There has been quite a few. So unless you know the whole story then you don't need to be saying anything. Also it's not just a snap your finger kind of thing on getting an appeal. One more thing the bible tells us that we are no one to judge. IF he did this then he should pay for his crime, because the kids will live with it for the rest of their lives.

Unknown - you are right there are two sides to every story. The true version and the fabricated one. You do not even know this guy but defend his innocence? Even though he was convicted by people who heard ALL of the evidence. I promise you one thing. Every criminal behind bars has family members that will stick by them and proclaim their evidence. It is just how things are. No one wants to believe bad things about their relatives and defend them to the end. They are biased. They have a vested interest in preserving the good name of their family. You would do better to believe the jury of people who listened to the evidence and found him guilty. They were not biased. They just heard the facts and decided the evidence against him was overwhelming.

Good Job, Judge! I've been in his courtroom before. (civil case) He hardly pays attention to his cases as it is.. taps his pen on his desk, yawns, counts the tiles on the ceiling, etc... So it doesn't suprise me.. Yells 'Guilty' then throws him a bus pass- Great job... How much did it cost the taxpayers for that little lapse in judgement??

Posted by: UNKNOWN Location: NORTH TEXAS on Aug 15, 2008 at 01:05 PM
If he was truly guilty, then how come they could never prove it before in the past trial when he had a hung jury? I agree running did not help him any. That makes anyone look guilty. I just don't think anyone should bash him unless they know for sure or even the family unless you know. You can not hold against the family what one member does or did. I just know that no one really knows the truth but him and her and eventually whoever is lying is going to crack and then the whole truth will come out. I agree also that the family members that helped him was wrong. They should have made him turn his self in. But like I said don't bash anyone unless you know the whole story and the truth. You should never be judgemental because if in the end he comes out to be innocent you all will feel stupid for bashing him and then you will turn to start bashing her. It is funny how all that works. So it is obvisous that one is lying and you should not bash until the whole truth comes about.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: G-ville on Aug 15, 2008 at 12:34 PM
To UNKNOWN, what are you talking about? They didn't convict him on 3 counts because of he said she said. There must have been some kind of evidence to support the claim. Do you really think his family is going to go around bragging about what he did? No! They are going to make him look like a saint. You are right there are two sides to every story, but I'm going with the side that has been proven.

I'm still pissed off that he was let outside without cuffs and supervision AFTER he was just found guilty of sexual assault of a child. Wake up court houses.

Posted by: WIlliam Location: Sherman on Aug 15, 2008 at 09:44 AM
For starters, if he was truly innocent, he would not have ran. He would have made one hell of a scene and fought it all the way! If you are convicted of a crime you did not committ are you going to go on the run? Secondly, his friends and family - the ones who helped him escape - should 10 pay for the manhunt, recapture and extradition and 2) should get some serious jail time for aiding a convicted felon. I think that about 3-5 years might convince people to NOT help felons escape! Offer these fools some incentive to not do this! Lastly, Judge Nall should pay as well because he used very bad "judgement" (oh, the irony) in letting this guy walk. He is guilty as well although his part was just stupidity and not intentional.

Posted by: Keon Location: Denver on Aug 15, 2008 at 09:27 AM
Another sad part of this story is the ex-girlfriend who helped. She has a daughter going into her first year of college and another still in high school. It is disgusting to me that she would throw them aside for something that everyone knew would have a bad ending. I hope these two kids have a alternative support system that will allow them the opportunity to fulfill their dreams.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Anywhere but there on Aug 15, 2008 at 09:20 AM
I understand how you all feel about this guy, and what he done was wrong! I Totaly agree! You can not JUDGE his WHOLE family by his and some of his family's actions. I know for a fact that there are people in his family that are not like this other half that was helping Preston. This whole family is not bad and bashing the WHOLE family is not right. If your going to BASH then Name the ones that you want to BASH and I agree the ones and anyone who was not family that helped him with his escape needs to be PUNISHED for helping him to the FULLEST EXTENT of the LAW! Just remember Everyone has a bad apple in there family and would you want to be judged for what the bad apple/apples in your family done? I hope the ones who helped him are punished, but lets stop saying the whole family because its not the whole family its a select few and a select few of his friends and the law will get them just like they got him. You can Run from the law but you can't HIDE forever! GRATS FOR A GREAT CAPTURE!

Posted by: here Location: gone on Aug 15, 2008 at 09:17 AM
THERE GOES MORE TAX DOLLARS WE HAVE TO PAY BECAUSE THE STUPBID JUDGE SAID SURE YOU CAN SMOKE

Posted by: UNKNOWN Location: NORTH TEXAS on Aug 15, 2008 at 08:33 AM
HOW DO YOU KNOW HE REALLY DID IT? I KNOW SOME OF HIS FAMILY ALSO.I WAS TOLD THAT AFTER HE DIVORCED THE GIRLS MOM, THE GIRL WANTED TO LIVE WITH HIM AND HE SAID NO BECAUSE I AM NOT YOUR REAL FATHER AND YOUR MOM WON'T LET YOU. SHE TOLD HIM I WILL GET YOU FOR THIS. SHE WAS A CHILD THEN. SHE WAITED TILL SHE WAS 18 TO SAY ANYTHING. DON'T MAKE SINCE. YOU CAN'T JUDGE PEOPLE; BECAUSE SOME FEMALES WILL ACCUSE JUST BECAUSE THEY DID NOT GET THEIR WAY. YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE EVIDENCE AND WHAT EVIDENCE I HAVE HEARD DOES NOT REALLY SUPPORT HER ACCUSATIONS. THERE IS ALWAYS TWO SIDES TO A STORY. IT WAS WRONG OF THE FAMILY TO HIDE HIM BUT IF YOU REALLY DON'T KNOW THE TRUTH THEN DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL. I DO NOT KNOW HIM PERSONALLY JUST SOME OF HIS FAMILY MEMBERS AND THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE. BUT I GUESS KNOW ONE REALLY KNOWS THE TRUTH BUT HIM AND HER.

How disturbing it is he was allowed to go outside to smoke! So stupid. The judge who allowed this should pay for the law enforcement hours it took to apprehend him!

Cleaned out the whole family garbage in one pick-up, good job law enforcement.

jail is to good for him.As for his family they need the tire whipped out of them for allowing him to go somewhere else so he could do this to someone else when he got the chance. But if you look around there seems to be more of these type of people still out on the street.

I wonder if Preston, at all feels bad, but at least he's caught, and we're all glad. A wonderful father, his sister said, what goes on in that family's head ? 20 years each, take that times three, doesn't seem near enough for me. These poor kids will not forget, a lifetime sentence is what they get. As for those who helped him run, I hope you get your due , and when they slam that cell door shut, I hope you're in there too. As for the courts, who let him go, outside and have a smoke, it makes us citizens scratch our heads, and wonder, what's next folks ? I hope some good can come of this, and people pay attention. The next pervert that comes along should stay there, in detention. What comes next, I hope and pray, for this sleezy worthless dope, is one day he'll meet Bubba, when he showers, and drops the soap.

What a whole family of losers and now they can all be together, IN A CELL.We will find out what kind of a justice system we have when these idiots go to trial or before a Judge and see if they get a slap on the wrist or jail time. This backwoods town deserves the Sheriff we have, LOSER.

I'm glad they caught him. But I wonder why, since he was found guilty, was he allowed outside to smoke without a law enforcement escort?

i know the family member who helped with the escape. my mom said he was a loser from day one! the best part is i called it 3 years ago that he would end up in prison and you know what? I WAS RIGHT!! hahahahahahaha.

all these comments are so so stupid.

Hurry up and get him off the streets before he harms someone else!!! Very funny. Grayson County took 11 years before taking him to what they called a trial. A suspected pedaphile walking the county for all those years. Pretty impressive work! What a joke!

Posted by: mlm Location: whitesboro on Aug 14, 2008 at 05:49 PM
I know this guy personally. His sister says he was and is, a great dad. WHAT!!!??? What is so great about anyone who would do those things to children? Those who helped him should do time as well. The county owes those children an apology. How can they just allow someone like that to just walk away in the first place?

HANG THEM ALL.

Is it true that Grayson County gave money ($5,000.00)to the Bryan County Sheriff, so they could use his Air-Force, if so need to get Mr. Sturch to go get the escapee, it cost less to fly than a Crown-Vic.

well see it does not pay to try to beat the system, becuase the system and the law will catch up to you eventually. Good job Law Enforcement Officers

Diana's right - pick up all who helped him get away. Let those serve time for allowing not only his escape - but the hurt he brought to those children. What were they thinking - let him go somewhere else & hurt more children?? Better yet - *make* them pay (cash) for all the man ours, etc to re-cature this pervert. Hit ppl where it really hurts!

Posted by: JMO on Aug 14, 2008 at 03:55 PM
The ones who helped him hid should get the same sentence he did. Losers.

anyone who knowingly helped him should be arrested...they violated those children also...
