4-27-06 - Smokers may soon be footing part of the bill for Texas public schools. The state house approved raising the cigarette tax by $1 per pack in an effort to cut property taxes and fund schools.
It is expected to generate around $680 million a year. If the senate agrees, the new tax will start September 1.
