SHERMAN, Tex. -- Several residential burglaries have been reported in Sherman in a span of about two months. Police say a single suspect was behind them all. Rashi Vats has the details.
In late July and early August, detectives noticed an increase in daytime residential burglaries in west Sherman. On Saturday, police finally caught the man they say robbed at least five homes.
Mark Shawn Smith, 42, led officers on a chase Saturday from Sherman that ended in Anna. Police say smith threw a number of items out of the vehicle including jewelry during the pursuit.
An investigation revealed that those items came from several homes that had been broken into. Detectives say they also found stolen property inside Smith's apartment.
"Several of the items that were stolen were from the first burglaries, we've located them in pawn and pawn shops in the Dallas area, and we are working with the Dallas Police Department and the pawn shops to recover those items and get them back to the owners," Detective Riley Day of the Sherman Police Department said,
Smith is in the Grayson County Jail. He already had an arrest warrant issued for a parole violation. After Saturday’s pursuit, Smith was arrested on charges of evading and tampering with evidence as well as possession of stolen property.
