LOVE COUNTY, OK -- A Love County Sheriff's deputy is injured in an accident on the job. The accident occurred about 2 a.m. Saturday on a county road east of Thackerville.

Troopers say 50-year-old Stephen M. Hawkins was pursuing another vehicle when the SUV he was driving went off the road and hit a tree. He was pinned inside for about 30 minutes. First responders were able to free him using the Hurst tool.

EMS crews took Hawkins to the Love County Hospital in Marietta in good condition for an arm injury.

A preliminary investigation shows unsafe speed going around a curve may have contributed to the accident.

Give me a break Debbie. First off let me say that I was very glad to see a person with your qualifications get the cheif position. Cudos to you. However, your inability or perhaps your neglectfulness to keep your very few resources in town and off of the interstate has changed my mind about you. Eric has no business patroling I-35. Either he is going to get killed out there or he is neglecting the city with which he is charged to protect. Sorry but this isn't California and you don't have the manpower or the resources to patrol I-35. Leave I-35 to the highway patrol and you focus on the city and then you can talk about criminals not having a chance.

Michael if you think our police force is a joke, ride around with us sometime and see exactly how we work. Until you walk the walk shut the talk. I will put all of our deputies and police force up against any other small communities and I guarantee we will come out on top. When you work as a team as the Sheriff Office and Marietta Police Dept does each and every day the criminals don't have a chance. Maybe you just had a run in with us.

What I want to know is what are they going to do to the drunk driver that they were chasing? He should be facing a few charges and some time in jail, especially since he was underage. The cops know who it was. Get him off the streets before he kills someone next time.

Barney did it again. Marietta's police force is a joke.

Mark, we are all glad you're still here to be talking about this. I know your sore but it really beats the alternative brother. Most people can't understand the honor and dedication that an officer must have to get out of bed and leave your family to help those in need!! GOD BLESS YOU and YOUR BUNCH!!!

My families prayers go out for you Mark and Barbara for everything that you do for Love County. I was worried that night I heard everything on the radio. It is never a good sound when a fellow law enforcement officer is injured and I am glad that he is ok. I enjoy working with you both and if there is anything I can do for the two of you please let us know, me and Melissa will help with anything that we can. Keep up the good work and I look foward to Mark getting well soon.

Re: To Dakota/Platter - I KNOW, it's AWFUL that they are allowed to be so large, there should be a body mass limit. Big and muscular is one thing...most over here don't fit THAT category either. Glad Mr. Hawkins is doing well.

Our prayers go out to the family and frinds, to Dakota the answer is Simple most Deputies can't fit into a real patrol car, over in your county, the undersheriff has to have 1 ton 4 door truck to get around in. Now Sheriff Russell is also a full grown lad.

I want to personally thank everyone for their prayers for my dad. It is a miracle that he survived with the few injuries that he has. (although a broken collar bone, ribs, etc... are hardly minor.) He is ALIVE! Thank God for his Mercy & Grace in our lives! My children are blessed to still have their "Papa"! Both of my parents are passionate about doing whatever they can to help make Love County a better place to live. I know that they will get thru this and continue giving so much of themselves. THANK YOU MARK & MOM! We love & appreciate you! Also, I'd like to thank Love County EMS, Dispatch, Sheriff Joe Russell, Dr. O'Connor, nurses, and others for all of your help! *A special thanks to Chief Julie Buckaloo for simply answering the phone at 2am, and being there for my family! Thank you!

Mark Hawkins is a blessed man and truly appreciates each of you! Thank you for being there for Mark, me and the girls. . Thank you for your visits, phone calls, and your prayers...and the food:) God Bless each of you.

What are our sheriffs doing driving gas guzzling SUV's? Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Hawkins but I have the scratch my head wondering where the brains are that are using this type of vehicle. They are also unsafe in a tight curve like this - proven over and over.

Note to Oklahoma Law Enforcement and the city governments: SUV'S ARE NOT SUITED FOR PURSUIT VEHICLES!!!!
