SULPHUR, Okla. -- In Murray County, city leaders have put off a decision on a name change for Sulphur.
A proposal to change the city's name to Sulphur Springs was tabled Monday night due to language in existing election laws. City leaders hope to place the issue on the November ballot, but cannot do that more than 60 days prior to the election.
A special meeting has been set for September 4 to reconsider the issue. If some council members get their way, they will file the proper paperwork with the county election board.
"There are lots of towns in Oklahoma that have gone to nothing, and we have too many resources, too many wonderful people to let this happen, so this is just a marketing tool that we're trying to use," said council member Karen Duck.
Sulphur was originally known as Sulphur Springs when it was founded in 1896, but city manager Bill Holley said the U.S. Postal Service dropped 'Springs' from the name 12 years later.
