SULPHUR, Okla. -- In Murray County, city leaders have put off a decision on a name change for Sulphur.

A proposal to change the city's name to Sulphur Springs was tabled Monday night due to language in existing election laws. City leaders hope to place the issue on the November ballot, but cannot do that more than 60 days prior to the election.

A special meeting has been set for September 4 to reconsider the issue. If some council members get their way, they will file the proper paperwork with the county election board.

"There are lots of towns in Oklahoma that have gone to nothing, and we have too many resources, too many wonderful people to let this happen, so this is just a marketing tool that we're trying to use," said council member Karen Duck.

Sulphur was originally known as Sulphur Springs when it was founded in 1896, but city manager Bill Holley said the U.S. Postal Service dropped 'Springs' from the name 12 years later.

If it's not broke, don't fix it. Just leave it alone.

The cost would be astronomical and for what? How many of you would choose to vacation in Sulphur Springs rather than in Sulphur just because of the name? I'm against a change, as are most of the people with whom I've spoken. It would be nice if the comments addressed the issue. The deprecating comments are unnecessary.

Just leave it like it stinks of...

The idea of more than two towns with the same name confuses some of you? How pathetic must you be. The possibility of there being two Sulphur Springs is merely trivia, its not like the want to change the name to New York City. Any of you have a problem with Texarkana?

I don't think changing the name is going to help with... How did they put it? "just a marketing tool that we're trying to use" What roadside pit and local drug stop doesn't do justice?

Sulphur Springs? Well, I guess since Boat Club was taken, all the good town names are gone.

Sybil, using your logic -the entire state of Oklahoma should want to change it's name back to Indian Territory - or even Texas back to Mexico - Previous councils decided to drop the "Springs" maybe they had good reasons - should we now negate their past work?

Yeah, i've got an old set of bed springs that i would be willing to throw out just as i'm coming into town. Sure hope i have all my apostrophe's in the right place.

Gosh, doesnt sound like you all get it. The original name was Sulphur Springs. Way back when it was Indian Territory. We are not "copying" anyone!

I am just now learning where Sulphur is, If they change the name I won't be able to find it.

Yeah and change Ardmore's name to Sherman. Ada to Denison. Heck just change Oklahoma's name to Texas. If you want to be like Texas just move to Texas.

To Dana...well hey...go for it...if you and your husband thinks its a good idea then that's 1/4 of the population isn't it?

Oh my gosh! There are tons of towns out there that have the same stinkin name.

Sounds like Oklahoma is trying to copy Texas. There is already a Sulphur Springs here in Texas. Don't think there needs to be one in Oklahoma too!

Since when does Springs and Stinks rhyme?

Posted by: Sybil Location: Sulphur on Aug 25, 2008 at 12:10 PM
Yes, I believe we should change the name back. We have such a beautiful location the name should reflect it. The word Sulphur means brimstone and people who have never been here cannot get a good impression just from the name. With zip codes, there is no confusion with another town.

I don't know about adding "springs". Think about it Sulphur STINKS - Sulphur SPRINGS.. (they rhyme).. or just good ole Sulphur.

It's funny that Dana puts apostrophes where they shouldn't be (plural words like "springs"... and "makes" shouldn't have an apostrophe either) and doesn't put them where they should be (possessive words such as "town's" and contractions such as "you're"!)

I agree with Candy. That would get confusing with the Sulphur Springs in TX. Besides, "Sulphur" is such an unattractive name, no matter what!

Posted by: Candy Location: Sherman on Aug 25, 2008 at 07:27 AM
Won't this conflict with Sulphur Spring in Hopkins Co., TX? Granted the most the Texas Sulphur Springs can boast of is their dairy industry plus closeness to Cooper Lake and bass hot spot Lake Fork.

Heck, you can change it to Irish Springs or Purty Flower Smell Springs but it still gonna smell like rotten eggs.

Posted by: Charlie Location: Davis on Aug 25, 2008 at 01:13 AM
Why change the name, it's the same pit it ever was!

I live here. And I am a 3rd generation resident. I think it would be great to change our beautiful towns name to Sulphur Springs. It make's sense to me. We have these beautiful natural spring's. I'm for it and so is my husband. And it makes the town sound prettier. We have all these natural spring fed creeks and rivers. If you haven't been here youre missing a beautiful, friendly, laid back town then youre missing a lot.
