SHERMAN, Tex. -- With the future of the low-cost Sherman daycare possibly closing its doors, one facility is stepping in to help out.

The Key Learning Child Development Center has a simple goal - provide quality childcare at an affordable price. Director Buffy Hanson says parents often face hard decisions during tough times.

"Do you want to work or do you want to send your kids to daycare? Because I mean, sometimes you are going to work just to pay your daycare bill and that was something we really wanted to get away from," Hanson says.

Recently, Key Learning received state approval to increase the number of children they care for from 95 to more than 150. Workers at the center say it is especially important since the Sherman Daycare could close.

Children as young as 18 months, and school age kids receive quality care in a safe place. Parent Nicole Murphy sends her son to pre-school at the center and is thankful for the opportunity.

"Daycare across the board is so expensive, so it gives him a good education without worrying about it being overly expensive," she says.

Experienced teachers work with children, providing daycare and faith-based pre-school. Each child receives two hot meals and a snack. School-age kids can even receive pick-up and drop-off service. Hanson says it is a labor of love for the staff.

"They love what they do, really high quality of work, and we just stay on a strict budget, but at the same time, we offer everything that some of the higher end daycares are offering."

Key Learning accepts child care service assistance. The facility still has about 40 spots available.

I believe that the point of KXII's story was to inform the public that there are other options out there for affordable daycare. I don't think this was meant to be a forum for whether Key Learning Center is the best or in some instances and opinions NOT. There are great places in Sherman to take your kids and every place is not the right place for every person. Every situation is different. Every child is different. Every need is different. I would encourage everyone to check out each facility and go with your gut. But, it is a necessity in this day and age. The director said it best, do you go to work to pay your daycare or do you just stay at home. There must be more affordable options for someone like me who has to work and doesn't have family or friends to keep my son. But, like someone else said, there will always be accidents, someone will get bit, there will be a teacher you don't like. You just have to weed through the crap!!!

I had a bad experience with a local center(which I paid for the entire month and he attended 4 hours) when my son was 2 months old and vowed I would NEVER use another public center again. I used private for 3 1/2 years until Key Learning was recommended. My son started there at 3 1/2 and of course there was an adjustment period we went through but now he couldn't be any happier and I couldn't have made a better decision for him. I even had enough trust in Key to move my daughter there when she turned 18 months. For a little girl that can't even talk yet she shows such excitement about going. We have been part of Key now for almost 1 1/2 years. My family and I are blessed to be a part of Key's church and pre-school.

Mother of one, what it seems like to me is that you are not telling the whole truth. Ive seen your MySpace page honey and you didnt even have a job anymore. You were just looking for something to possibly get a payday from and it didnt work for you. It is not the school's fault that your child does not know how to go down a slide. My son goes there and we have had NO PROBLEMS! Its unfortunate that your child was injured, but that is part of life and it could happen anywhere. That school is FANTASTIC and they are very attentive and very aware of what kids are doing at ALL TIMES! So my advice for you is to GET A CLUE! I think other schools should watch out for you!

To the Mother of One-who can't spell. Your one daughter needs to be in an educational oriented preschool so that she may learn basic spelling skills, you are surely not capable or qualified to be her teacher. Ms. Mother of One, you say she was only in Day Care for 5 days, there is no way that you would be able to draw the conclusions you have alleged in your comment. You made some very outlandish and slanderous statements. I have grandchildren in Day Care so I felt justified in making several calls to check the validity of your story from all sides. I have found that your statements are not true. You should set a better example for your child in many ways, one being not to look for someone to blame in every situation. Your posting was inaccurate, dishonest and inflammatory. If you continue to make such false accusations I certainly hope someone holds you accountable.

By the way, Per State Inspector, Joy Slay, investigation closed, center not at fault, no violations by the way, You should that by now?????

Mother of one--did you not teach your child how to properly go down a slide. As a parent I always made sure she sat properly and did not have a jacket with strings attached. I think anyplace you go there will be accidents, I think you are a little quick to judge on who was watched properly, maybe you should have stayed home and not gone back to work so that your child can continue in a bubble.

I hate to say I worked at a daycare for all of 2 weeks and most daycares are a joke. The parents ask you how there child is doing and you better tell them fine great even if it is not true, the snacks and lunches you better not think your child is getting well feed, some of the caregivers are there for a paycheck and that is it I saw and heard these people talking to these children and I tell you what if you new you would pop that person right were they stand. not saying there are not good people that work in these place but I am saying there are very few. I will do everything I can to keep my kids out of these places they are there for yours and the states money not you or your child 1 teacher to 18 or more kids is a bunch of crap I had the 3-4 year olds there was noway I could teach like I was suppose to. I am also a home owner it took me 10 years of working to pay off my house and I am really tired of Grayson county trying to raise my taxes every year for something else.

May i also add that day cares only let you know what they want you to hear.

I went back to work after being a stay home mother for two years. key memorial was recommended to me by my brother. my daughter attendend key memorial for 5 days and well on the 5th day i had to go and rush her to wnj ER. she was not watched good enough and ended up falling on a slide and bite her lip open. the ER dr wanted to give her 3-4 stitches. her jaw and neck were also swolloen and bruiesed exremly bad. There is an on going investigation open and i personaly do not recommend this key learning to any parent. This was such a horrible thing that happened that could have been prevented if they would have kept a better eye on her. and guess who is stuck with the medical bills and thier child being afraid of heights??? we are no thanks to key memorial.

Fozzy, if you had any idea what you were talking about, you would know that these days parents aren't equipped to "pre-educate". In most cases parents derail their children's education by improperly teaching them. They get to kindergarten and the teacher has to undo what the parent has done. Pre-school gives a child an opportunity to learn the basics to make a smooth transition into kindergarten. Most kids enter kindergarten behind the eight ball if they haven't attended some type of pre-school. The day's of your pie in the sky 50's home life are long gone. Unfortunately most parents, whether in a two parent or single parent home, have to work. I'm glad that there is a safe, fun, loving environment for children in the Sherman area. I know there is no changing a narrow, red neck, backwoods person like yourself. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, yours just happens to be way off base. Have a great day!! : )

Go Buffy!!! Anything Buffy has her hand on is going to be AMAZING!!

Okay, so now we have confirmation that there are daycares these parents can afford. These parents now need to enroll their children in the loving hands of these daycares so that the City of Sherman can quit wasting tax payer money on a function that should come from the private industry, not from our tax dollars, and they can close the publicly funded daycare and spend our tax money where it should be spent, for the good of ALL the citizens.

Fozzy...for your information, the preschools are now working with the school districts for the minimum educational requirements expected for kindergarten. With their cooperative efforts a standard is set for all kids (getting them ready). And furthermore, yes my son is in preschool but he is functioning on a kindergarten/1st grade level. We chose Key because it is a loving environment and it actually challenges him. I have come to the conclusion you don't know what you are talking about or YOU are the product of the kiddie kennels.

I am lucky enough to have family that watches my child but I may not have that option soon due to their failing health and I think it is great that there is a wonderful and affordable place like this to send children.

Oh Fozzy, Fozzy From Ardmore...what an uneducated person you sound like. Do you live in a bubble or something? Having a child in preschool does not make them a "kennel kid"..whatever that means. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about and you know nothing about this facility. I understand people are entitled to their own opinions, but come on. Honestly, you seem to be a person that has nothing else to do with their life and you are just jealous that you are not part of such a wonderful facility. What was the last thing you did good for your community? Key Learning is a fantastic SCHOOL. I am a stay at home mom and my son is there to get ready for Kindergarten and has made a lot of friends and looks forward to school everyday. Last time I checked he was not a dog nor did he attend a kennel daily. What a moronic remark! So have fun with your unsocialized children and see how they turn out being raised in the bubble. :) Have a great day! ;)

Like I said.. its like a homeless shelter.. but people don't know how to have and keep relationships so the kids suffer.. later we all suffer. The first few waves of kennel kids have hit adulthood..

I am a real parent but unfortunately I am a single parent and having my children in a "Kiddie Kennel" is a must for me unless I want to be dependent upon welfare!! Is that acceptable?

Posted by: Fozzy Location: Ardmore on Aug 25, 2008 at 10:16 AM
Gee.. I thought that Parents were supposed to give their children the pre-education that they need??? Parents are getting to be about worthless anymore.. Kiddie Kennels cannot give the things a child really needs and real parents knows it! Kiddie kennels serve a purpose for those who are in dire need and circumstances (like homeless shelters) but should not be where the majority of children are RAISED...

My son attends here and it has been a wonderful experience for him. I would highly recommend Key Learning Center to parents interested in sending their children to a FAITH-BASED preschool. They will get the "pre-education" they need and lots of love! Thank you Key Learning Staff for giving my son a place to grow. :o)

Hey, how about that? Quality, affordable child care that isn't funded by the city of Sherman. Now the city can afford to put in more walking paths that are only usable by the west Sherman elite!

God Bless these folks for helping Sherman kids and parents, there is a special place in Heaven for them.

See folks, there is affordable daycare for these families WITHOUT the City of Sherman spending our tax money for the benefit of so few.
