05-03-06 - A federal jury near Washington has decided that al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui should be sentenced to life in prison for his role in 9/11.
The decision came in the jury's seventh day of deliberations. The jury had only two choices: a death sentence or life in prison. Moussaoui was the only person charged in this country in connection with the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. Although he was in jail on immigration violations on September 11, the jury ruled that his lies kept the government from identifying and stopping some of the hijackers.
During the six-week trial, the jury saw gruesome images, and heard the first public playing of the cockpit recorder from United Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania. And there was emotional testimony from the relatives of victims.
The same panel decided in March that Moussaoui was eligible for execution.
