School Bond on Tishomingo Ballot

05-04-06 - Voters in Tishomingo have an $850,000 school bond quickly approaching ballots. On Tuesday, residents in the Tishomingo area will vote on a major bond issue that will address problems not only at the high school, but also at the early childhood center.

Tishomingo schools have been working on the bond proposal for quite some time saying that the improvements needed for the high school building, as well as the early childhood center are long overdue. The $850,000 bond issue is designed not only to add new buildings to the district, but will also upgrade the facilities to meet ADA requirements.

Pre-K and Kindergarten students currently attend school in temporary metal buildings that are over 30 years old. The proposal would create a new building across the street from the current facility.

And at the high school, though the buildings are not quite as worn down, more space and accommodations for handicapped students are the focus for that campus. A new building to house science labs and classes will give the school the option to add more classes to the curriculum.

If the school bond issue passes on Tuesday, school officials say the new building could be ready for use by the 2007-2008 school year.
