GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. – Investigators in Grayson County made ten arrests Monday, confiscating heroin in the process. Investigators say this is just one battle in the war against increasing drug use in Grayson County. Stephanie Brletic talked with those investigators and drug counselors.
Grayson County investigators say they did not plan Monday’s bust, but thanks to a discovery made by U.S. Marshals, ten people were taken into custody on drug related charges.
When U.S. Marshals arrived in Howe to serve Peter Petsche a felony warrant Monday, they discovered a large amount of heroin. They called in Grayson County Sheriff's investigators.
Sergeant Ricky Wheeler at the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office says heroin is a drug they are seeing more and more around the county. Drug use is something officials say they are always fighting.
"Meth is still the most popular drug around. Heroin at this time is on a fast rise, and there are a lot of people in Grayson County that are using and abusing heroin," Sgt. Wheeler said.
Investigators arrested Petsche and four other people in the home and another five people who went to the house to buy drugs.
Wheeler says this area has several major highways that are used for drug trafficking and says there is a growing heroin problem in the area.
"Most people associate heroin with big cities. Chicago, New York, Dallas, but it is in the small cities and even here in Grayson County and Sherman."
Drug counselors say as heroin use increases, they anticipate seeing more addicts within the next few years. Many drug addicts at the house of hope do not come in by choice but rather as a condition of their probation.
Counselor Vickie Cherry says the most important thing is that people who abuse any kind of drugs get the help they need.
"I deal with life and death every single day. I don't know when they walk out that door who might make it back or who's going to be able to live outside of incarceration," House Of Hope counselor Vickie Cherry says.
