5-6-06 - ADA, Okla. (AP) - A four-mile portion of one of the state's 10 turnpikes could soon become free for drivers.
Part of a bill signed Thursday by Governor Brad Henry would allow the state Turnpike Authority to transfer all or part of the Chickasaw Turnpike to the state Transportation Department.
The 17-mile, two-lane turnpike runs between Ada and Sulphur in southern Oklahoma and is the shortest of the state's turnpikes. If the transfer is approved, a four-mile stretch of the road – from State Highway 7 to U-S Highway 177 -- could become free for travel.
After the proposed transfer, the Transportation Department could add northbound access to U-S 177 from the turnpike and allow for westbound access to the turnpike off U-S 177.
