05-08-06 - A piece of Sherman history went up in flames Monday when a fired destroyed a home more than 100 years old. The wood frame is all that is left standing from the home known as the “Lucas House”, built by the Lucas Family back in 1888.
The Sherman fire marshal said it did not take long for the house to be completely destroyed. Just before 11:30 a.m. a driver spotted flames coming through the roof of the home and call 911. When the fire department arrived, it had spread through the upstairs area. The fire marshal confirms that a family of four was at home, but made it out safely when they spotted the smoke.
It took several fire crews about an hour to put the flames out. The fire did not damage the businesses on either side of the home.
