Gas Fire Forces Evacuations in Durant

6-3-06 – In Durant, a natural gas fire forced some residents to evacuate Saturday afternoon. Firefighters say demolition crews bulldozing the site of the Russell Trailer Park on East Main Street clipped a gas line behind just before 2:30 p.m. At the same time, a spark from a cutting tool ignited a fire.

The blaze spread quickly through the debris and came close to a group of nearby trailer homes. A handful of homes were evacuated as a precaution. Parts of Parkland and East Main Streets were closed for a short time.

No one was hurt. The fire department said the fire was accidental.
