i agree Lou working for a district a person gets to see first hand what alot of the money gets waisted on when it comes to upper management!!!And it is alot!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 10, 2008 at 12:31 PM
To Educator: I am so glad that I do not work in a district with you. I bet you are the most negative, first to criticize, person in the room. What truly shows your intelligence is voting against a proposal that is meant to help you. Thank God I don't teach in Sherman....and I never, ever will.

Posted by: Lou Location: Sherman on Oct 10, 2008 at 08:10 AM
First, I agree that teachers, custodians, lunch ladies, and aides are underpaid. But I've always thought the upper administration was overpaid and overstaffed, with professionals (big salaries) doing jobs that para-professionals could easily do - with supervision/oversight. In industry, in order to be competitive, we had to learn to operate leaner. Time for government, and, yes, school districts are part of government, to learn to live leaner - beginning at the top, not mid and lower levels.

i agree with HAPPY teachers are the ones that should make the money in the district they are far under paid!!!

I totally agree with Educator who submitted at 5:15. I wish that the teachers would not take the issue personally. I was one of the 65 and older voters, and for me it was a matter of money. Because of being on a fixed income in these troubling economic times, I am having to cut back a lot on my spending. (2 meals a day is working just fine and I think I can do without one or two of my prescriptions. I can also walk more instead of using my car. It just takes a little longer.) I am sorry, teachers. I know you work really hard. I did it for many years, but I just cannot afford any more in taxes.

As an educator who voted no, I am watching with great interest to see how the Board of Trustees proceeds. It's time for them to take a hard stand with Dr. Hambrick and demand efficiency. They need to get into the schools and objectivley assess programs and staffing. They cannot just take the word of those from central office. This is a time for teachers to make their voice heard as to what programs and processes have been forced upon them that are not efficient or effective. This vote wasn't an issue of money for many. It was an issue of trust in the decision making and spending habits of those at central office.

Teachers are the reason you can read, write and type.Get the facts and quit whinning.

i am so sorry i left out the cooks that work just as hard as anyone in the district !!!the cooks, custodians, and maint. are all under paid !your atheletic director, superintendant, maint. director, these are the ones making the money!!!

thank you teachers! sorry that it was not passed!

You are correct, taxpayer, it is a darn shame. The doctor, who probably spent 12 in public schools, and sees no need now to support them, has his head up his you know what. So do the others who share his beliefs. Educators, and people who are concerned about them, remember, if you ever need a urologist in the Sherman area, Steven Johnson didn't support you, so please, don't support him. Use one of the may others in this area.

Posted by: Taxpayer Location: Sherman on Oct 8, 2008 at 10:24 AM
I do not understand how we can turn this down. This is our future. This Doctor says that he shouldnt have to pay because he doesnt have any kids is BS. Taxpayer money put him through school!!!! He has one of the largest homes in Grayson County. Of course he doesnt want higher taxes. His house is worth wayyyy more than its on the tax rolls for. Dont build a 10,0000 SF house if you dont want to pay HIGH taxes!! JUST IGNORANT!!!

Posted by: Allen Location: Sherman on Oct 7, 2008 at 10:34 PM
@ Voter: You may look at unbalanced per-student numbers and high maintenance expenses and think that they are unfair, but quite frankly, those numbers were going to stay unbalanced whether this had passed or not. Now, we just have to deal with the fact that the lower end is getting screwed harder than they were before- the Athletics department will not be affected at all, I guarantee it.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 7, 2008 at 08:24 PM
jt, you are so right, you people that are putting these custodians down, they are the ones that clean up after your kids when the make a mess in the cafeteria, you parents really need to teach your kids how to act in the cafeteria rather than throwing food around and spilling stuff and they can't clean up after theirselves, I think they need to get paid more, I know I would not do it, because by the time I got through with your kids you would want someone else in there besides me

Posted by: jt Location: denison on Oct 7, 2008 at 12:30 PM
as far as maint. and custodial not being busy come on out and work along side some of these folks !!!they are the ones that clean up after your children and fix the things that your children tear up these people work very hard !!!don't judge till you've worked a day or so in thier shoes !!!

David Carr ran for the Denison school Board a few years ago and lost. He is a stay at home dad that constantly attacks our ISD. His children attend a private school, but yet he attacks the ISD every chance he gets. At some point he got mad (maybe about losing) and decided to make it personal. Luckily, the leaders in Denison can read him for what he really is.

Posted by: Voter on Oct 7, 2008 at 09:03 AM
Have you checked out the percentage of money spent on Athletics in relation to direct per student cost? Have you checked on maintenance/custodial cost? - most appear not very busy. Have you checked out administrative cost. If all these areas have been investigated then you know how to vote. There is more involved than yes or no. We all need to be sure we are informed on all issues.

Posted by: JACK Location: POTTS on Oct 6, 2008 at 09:28 PM
one question to all that voted no are the lazy parents of these kids going to teach them when some excellent teachers are gone south to where a community cares? you say you have facts are you sure you have the real facts oh well hope you are happy

Posted by: Richie Location: Sherman on Oct 6, 2008 at 09:09 PM
Maybe some of you should go to the Appraisal District website and look at the taxes that the places you shop have to pay. Look at the taxes your employer has to pay. Then get your calculator and figure out how much this "rollback" would cost THEM every year, then ask yourself where the money COMES FROM. It comes from YOU. Higher costs for the goods and services you buy, and flat wages and fewer benefits where you work. It doesn't "only" cost you $100-130 dollars per year. Wake up out there.

Posted by: Allen Location: Sherman on Oct 6, 2008 at 08:21 PM
I can't believe any of you thought that the tax rollback would pass anyway. We live in Sherman, a Southern Baptist community. Last time I checked, conservatives didn't care about what was going on with their kids until MILITARY AGE.

Posted by: To Sherman Parent on Oct 6, 2008 at 05:46 PM
You have obviously bought into the SISD propaganda. Over 65 folks WOULD have to pay the tax, though indirectly. Where do you think WalMart, Kroger, Walgreens, etc get the money to pay THEIR part of the school taxes? From their patrons, DUH. In addition, when the state LOWERED the school tax, they made up the difference elsewhere, like creating a new BUSINESS tax. And, where do you suppose the businesses get the money to pay their taxes? Their customers. DUH ! Thank goodness the taxpayers saw through the BIG LIE this time around. The propaganda that says that "the tax will ONLY cost you X dollars" neglect to mention the effect it will have on local business and industry. Go ahead, jack up the taxes on our industries too....but don't cry when you don't like your raise this year.....they gotta pay their increased school taxes. And, their taxes are a hundred times what Joe Homeowner pays. Perhaps you should EDUCATE yourself before trashing other people. Get your facts straight.

Posted by: USA Location: Sherman on Oct 6, 2008 at 05:36 PM
You idiots on here that were not for the vote, when it comes time to let teachers go and you don't have anyone to teach your kids or give your kids education, I guess you lazy parents can start homeschooling them, you do expect the teachers to do everything for you parents anyhow

Posted by: Boy Location: Denison on Oct 6, 2008 at 05:34 PM
Who is David Carr?

Posted by: Sherman Parent on Oct 6, 2008 at 05:08 PM
It is a shame that all of the back woods, country bumpkin mentality is showing in Sherman. It would be nice if you people would bother to EDUCATE yourselves in what this election is about, rather than just seeing an increase in taxes. The proposed tax rate would have still been lower than the 2005 rate. Sherman needed this to pass to keep quality teachers and programs in SISD. When you people who voted no have something to gripe about in SISD, you need to go look in the mirror. When I went to the polls, 99% of the people there were over 65 and this didn't affect them anyway. I bet most of them had no clue that this didn't affect them because no one bothers to know what this really was about. As for the ignorant doctor who sent his letters and took out ads in the paper...surely you know if you build a 10,000 square foot 1.5 million dollar house...surely you know your taxes are going to be high. Go ride your Harley!

Posted by: Bruce Location: Sherman on Oct 6, 2008 at 04:37 PM
How many tens of thousands of dollars has SISD blown from the last bond package?? Also its difficult to feel sorry for a district that constantly has their hand out wanting in our pockets when their main representative, Dr. Hambrick, cruises around town in his Mercedes. Don't think this isn't noticed.

Posted by: To Mary Location: in Sherman on Oct 6, 2008 at 03:22 PM
You CAN actually do what you propose, effectively. Keep paying your SISD taxes, and put your kids in parochial school. Put your money where your mouth is. Your child WILL get a better education.

Posted by: Mary Location: Sherman on Oct 6, 2008 at 02:14 PM
I just can't believe the people of Sherman are so selfish. I know this is a hard time to be asking for money but I for one would pay double taxes if it would improve my childs education.

Posted by: To Location: Brian Weise on Oct 6, 2008 at 01:21 PM
You are the ignorant one. Denison is actually stepping up to the plate and hopefully getting rid of that "small town" mentality. You have no idea how many teachers, good teachers, leave Denison for higher paying jobs to the south. Sherman showed just how much they value education.

Posted by: To Marc and a teacher Location: Sherman on Oct 6, 2008 at 12:31 PM
Holding teacher salaries over the voters' heads is just plain wrong. Apparently most voters saw through the threats as well. The problem with the SISD is that they blow too much money on non-teachers and pretty facades, rather than putting the money into actually teaching our kids. New buildings and more counselors don't teach our kids. Teachers and parents teach our kids. When I was a kid in school, every classroom had a "counselor". It was about 2 feet long, and 4-5 inches wide. It worked just fine. And if you went home whining to your parents about your experience with the "board of education", you got more of the same from Mom and Dad. The teachers and the kids are the victims of school boards and administrators who have lost sight of real education in the name of their castle-building.

Posted by: sherman Location: sherman on Oct 6, 2008 at 11:25 AM
All of you crying Get Over It. Sherman is sick of the high taxes. Stop using the kid education as your excuse and blaming the teachers just because it did not pass. I am proud sherman voters stood up and voted against. Move to Denison or somewhere else. This is life and get over it. Yeah for Sherman voters for against.

Posted by: Tracy Location: Sherman on Oct 6, 2008 at 08:02 AM
Yeah for us! Take that you greedy SOBs. Take the billions you people got a couple of years ago out of your pockets and use it for the schools. Quit spending millions on schools, then tearing them down afterwards. Obviously you people need a financial advisor to manage your money.

Posted by: Bryan Location: Sherman on Oct 6, 2008 at 06:55 AM
I am glad that the Sherman election failed. The last thing this community needs is more taxes. The school system will just have to learn how to tighten its belt and get rid of some of the excess waste like everyone else.

Posted by: tax-payer on Oct 5, 2008 at 10:24 PM
just wondering how many people noticed the SISD propaganda at the Fairview School voting site. Clearly this was in violation of the voting code.

Posted by: joe blaze Location: sw on Oct 5, 2008 at 07:23 PM
i really hope all the ones that voted no have enjoyed a good positive school because you have just destoyed it

This will most likely hurt the Athletic programs in Sherman....

Posted by: Your Child's Educator Location: Sherman on Oct 5, 2008 at 09:57 AM
I would love for those 1400 people to spend a week in a teacher's shoes; especially at the high school where you have almost 2000 students. The staff at SHS do their best every day to keep control in the classrooms and in the halls and in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch. We are outnumbered. We simply cannot be in all places at all times. We need the extra security measures in place to help ensure your child is safe at school. Now with the failure of this election, not only will we be unable to put in extra security devices, but we may lose staff as well ????? How crazy is that? I don't understand why the people would say no to this...to the education of your child in a safer environment...to better parking lots...to helping retain quality staff (SISD's pay schedule is lower than most in this area)

Posted by: a teacher on Oct 5, 2008 at 08:41 AM
Once again the communities show teachers and school districts how little they are appreciated. Thanks...

Posted by: Brian Wiese Location: Denison on Oct 5, 2008 at 05:23 AM
This shows how smart Sherman taxpayers are and how ignorant Denison voter are! How foolish to vote for raising your taxes at a time like this! No wonder Sherman is growing and Denison is closing business and people are leaving.

Posted by: Marc Location: Sherman on Oct 5, 2008 at 01:52 AM
How sad that the people of Sherman won't support their schools by passing the roll back election. You want great, schools but you're not willing to pay for them. Sherman will continue to lose teachers (like my wife and myself) to surrounding districts for various reasons, money being one of them. My current salary is considerably more than what SISD pays for the same number of years experience, AND I have students who on the whole come to school ready to learn and parents who truly support their schools. Until the citizens of Sherman decide to TRULY support their school district Sherman will not have schools that are all they can be. It is as simple as that. None of this is to say that the teachers who choose to reamin is SISD don't work hard and do the best they can, with what they have. SISD has some of the best teachers around, but more and more are choosing to leave.

Thank you David for all the negative things you said, and all your negative research...if things mattered so much to you, you would have your children in DISD.

For all your actions David Carr...they were all for nothing!!! The people have spoken, and they don't agree with you AGAIN!!!

AWESOME!!! I am so excited about the future of DISD!!! AND I thank the community for supporting us!!!

So, Sherman voters FINALLY got enough of the SISD and their wasteful spending. It's about time.
