SOUTHMAYD, Tex. -- A 15-year-old Southmayd girl was bitten by a snake while taking a shower Tuesday morning. Stephanie Brletic has the bizarre story from Southmayd.

The incident happened around 6:30 Tuesday morning at the girl's home on Sunny Road. Authorities say the girl was taking a shower when a snake came through the drain and bit her on the ankle, before it then slithered back into the drain.

The Sherman Fire Department responded to the home and made the decision to airlift the teen to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where she is listed in stable condition Tuesday afternoon.

Sherman fire Chief J.J. Jones says firefighters never saw the snake, but think it may have been poisonous.

"There was some swelling and indication that it may have been a poisonous snake. There was some attempt to retrieve the snake, but that was not successful," Jones said.

Neighbors say Tuesday’s incident scared them, but that it is not unusual. One even told us about a similar situation last week.

Jones says situations like these are not uncommon as the weather starts to cool.

"This is the time of the year that snakes are looking for some other environments. It was a cold morning. I'd say it's not uncommon, but it's certainly kind of rare for us."

Jones went on to say this is the time of year when you may start to see snakes more often. His advice if you do see a snake is to simply walk away.

Any snake at any time can crawl up your siding onto the roof and slide down the leaded air duct which allows your drains to flow freely. At this point the snake has access to your toilets and drains!!!!

HMMM...TWO MAJOR INCIDENTS IN SOUTHMAYD IN ONE DAY. IN BOTH SITUATIONS, SHERMAN FIRE RESPONDED AND DID A GREAT JOB. WHERE WAS SOUTHMAYD FIRE DEPT??? WHAT SERVICES ARE TAXPAYERS GETTING FROM THE CITY OF SOUTHMAYD? THE SOUTHMAYD CITY COUNCIL, POLICE DEPT., AND MOST OF ALL, THE FIRE DEPT. ARE NOTHING BUT A BIG JOKE. THE FIRE DEPT. IS THE LAUGHING STOCK OF EVERY OTHER FIRE DEPT. IN GRAYSON CO. IF YOU LOOK AT THE LEADERSHIP OF THE FIRE DEPT. YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHY. ANYWAY...MY THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ARE WITH BOTH VICTIMS AND THEIR FAMILIES.

Tumbleweed, you goof.. she used a stapler.. how else do you think she got both fang marks so even? More than likely, the " alledged" snake entered elsewhere in the dwelling and went down the shower drain to hide or escape. Snakes and other creepy crawlies are more skillful than you might think when it comes to home invasions.

Did you research the sanitation system? You did not say whether it was septic, or city. If septic was it aerated or the older seep-line type? How do unwanted entities get into that area's sanitation systems? Could this be prevented with screens of sort? We live outside city limits and use the old septic system, could this be something we should watch for?

Sixx, Yeah right, drama queen faked the whole thing, used an ice pick on her ankle to make it look like a snake bite. Geez, give the child a break, strange things happen. I hope it wasn't poisonous and she gets well soon.

My Ex-husband was stung by a scorpion that crawled out of the drain in the shower.. I didn't mind....just sayin'.

We have rattle snakes where we live and they are really bad out on the roads

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 7, 2008 at 01:31 PM
Again, watch out for snakes!!! It's not yet too cold. Seems that there were alot more snake bites than usual this year.(???) Particularly copperheads. I will say a prayer for this child. Creepy!
