DURANT, Okla. -- A schoolteacher in Durant had his mouth ripped open when he got into a fight to save his daughter on Monday after she called her father for help. Rashi Vats reports.

A father was trying to help his daughter convince a man to leave her property Monday at a home in Durant.

Police say 33-year-old Shane Shockey was at the daughter's house asking for his cell phone back. The daughter called her father to help her get Shockey out of her yard.

When the father showed up, police say the father and Shockey got into a fight, and at one point Shockey ripped the father's mouth open, splitting his lips.

The father then charged at Shockey with a pair of hedge clippers.

“It's a pretty serious crime especially you know with the fact that he places his hands in the gentleman’s mouth and spreads his mouth open to the point to where it cuts his lip. You know that's pretty serious. It doesn't get more aggravated than that,” Andy Navid of the Durant Police Department said.

Durant police officers located Shockey later that Monday evening and arrested him on charges of aggravated assault and battery.

The father’s condition is unknown Wednesday. No word on bond for Shockey.

re: concerned -- shockey gave the woman permission to take the kids, and the police told her not to release them to him because of his condition. SHE DID NOT HAVE HIS CELL PHONE! the only person that came in to his property was the emt's and the police because he was passed out in his own vomit and his kids called 911. that is fact, everyone keeps alluding to the second half of the story but if you don't know what led up to this you really shouldn't say anything.

While it sounds as if Shockey is quilty, what is not addressed is why this woman had his children when he is their guardian?, why she had his cell phone? why she called her father instead of the police? and just because she is a teacher, that makes everything she says correct. There is two sides of this story, but I am not sure that Mr. Shockey will ever get to share his side. Anyone that has seen this man with his children, knows he is strict, but loving. Yes, he was angry. Someone took his children, his property, and came into his home earlier. None of that was addressed.

Shockey should pay for his crime. First, by going to jail and then by monetary restitution. He must really be crazy - attacking a Lawyer's husband?!

From reading the "Daughters" 2 comments sounds like she isn't all there.

Some reporter should look closely at Shockey's past. He had a standoff with the Durant Police 2 years ago and he should have gone to prison then.

Amen to Fred and Durant Citizen...we cannot stand by and let insane people attack the elderly and then let them out with a slap on the wrist. I read that the DA was trying to up the charges to a felony now..I hope they do..I dont feel safe in a town with a nut job like Shockey here.

Posted by: Fred on Oct 10, 2008 at 01:39 PM
Amen to "Durant Citizen"! Our society would be much better off without insane punks like Shockey running loose. Shockey is an animal and must be dealt with accordingly. Brute force is all he understands and prison time is the ONLY answer! Prison has a wrench for every nut that enters there.

This is why we are allowed to defend ourselves on our property with deadly force. Shockey said he would kill McGehee. He should be charged with Attempted Murder. I have a gun and will use it if people invade my home. Throw Shockey in jail let him get some justice for beating up a much smaller, older man.

You know maybe the story is getting out of hand if we were not there who really knows what happened. I was always told to hear both sides of the story!!!!

Shockey was too "ill" a short time earlier to take care of himself or his children that this lady was called to get them so they could be cared for. Then the only thing that concerned him was his cell phone and entered a person's home and attacked this girl's father when he told him he didn't know anything about a cell phone. What was this father/teacher suppose to do while he is being attacked? Ask the attacker (Shockey) to wait while the police is called. This guy needs to be in jail and his children in the custody of someone else who does not have anger management and who knows what other kind of issues. Has this guy been drug tested? Sounds like a good idea to me. Maybe Oklahoma needs the Texas law where you can just shoot them if they enter your home. It isn't like this guy knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer, he just walked in apparently. Oh yeah, Shockey sounds like a wonderful father. Should be voted "father of the year".

throw 'em all in jail, they can all fight over making collect phone calls to their poor kids from a payphone in Bryan Co. Jail

Posted by: Fred Location: Noble on Oct 9, 2008 at 06:44 PM
Take Heed! How long are we going to sit by while these punks who have no respect for anything or anyone think they can do anything they want?! How long will we tolerate this behavior? What if it were your child, or your house? What would you have done? Kudos to a man who had the courage to do the right thing! Do NOT let this get swept under the carpet. You and your family may be next.

so this guy was more worried about his cell phone than his kids, and this woman was just helping protect the kids per police orders? Sounds like a really great dad...I hope those poor babies can get out of that situation permanently. Sounds like this guys will snap over anything!

perplexed-- if the reporter would do a little extra digging i bet the stories wouldn't be so different.

Posted by: perplexed on Oct 9, 2008 at 05:21 PM
Two sides, or blind sides, to every story. Reading the above and below certainly paints a different picture than just the news story. But you gotta wonder if the below comments are fact or fiction.

I wish the station would talk to the actual witnesses and parties on both sides of the case so that they could get the whole story, the scary thing is mr. shockey is now out on bail has anyone heard of remand??!! i'm locking my door tonight, i suggest the same for everyone else in durant.

I think everyone should know, the innocent people in this story were the very ones who were doing a good deed. They responded to a request for help. I am deeply disappointed as to how people are attacking the innocent. Why is there not more being said about the intruder. He was the attacker, he was the one that entered the residence, he was asked to leave the premises, and then HE INITIATED THE BRUTAL ATTACK! What in the world did anyone besides him do wrong? Now ask yourselves, why is it people don't want to get involved?

Posted by: m Location: ardmore on Oct 9, 2008 at 01:47 PM
why don't someone just rip his lips open and let him know how that feels.

Posted by: Joe Location: Norman on Oct 9, 2008 at 01:32 PM
Case closed. Shockey was wrong, broke the law, needs prison time to get his life back together, and to learn to respect the law. Next.

Somebody call Jerry Springer.

Posted by: Joe Location: Norman on Oct 9, 2008 at 12:20 PM
Bottom Line - Shockey broke the law. Had it been me, and someone invaded my private property, I would have used the right of all Americans to defend their private property, including deadly force. He is lucky that he will only be going to prison. Could have been the morgue. Was Shockey under the influence of any type of substance at the time?

All that over a stupid cellphone?

Posted by: JM Location: Ard on Oct 9, 2008 at 10:41 AM
I'm sorry this happened to the guy, but...they do have POLICE in Durant, don't they? If you're that fearful of someone, call the police next time.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 9, 2008 at 09:50 AM
way to go dad of daughter.

Posted by: STACY Location: SHERMAN on Oct 9, 2008 at 09:32 AM
I'm happy that this father protected his daughter, but the police should have been called first and then maybe there wouldn't have been a fight between these men. It seems strang if the guy would not leave her home then call the police and they would gladly make him leave. Come on people its just a cell phone ........

Posted by: RC Location: Texas on Oct 9, 2008 at 08:49 AM
Bite Him? Are you kidding me, why didn't he shoot him. Why didn't she call police instead of her dad? This is crazy.

Posted by: tracy Location: sherman on Oct 9, 2008 at 08:45 AM
Why didn't she give the guy his phone back? Would have saved a lot of problems.

Posted by: That Girl Location: Bryan County on Oct 9, 2008 at 08:16 AM
Why didn't she just give him the cell phone back??????????????????

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 9, 2008 at 07:59 AM
Why didn't he bite him? Still....ouch!

Posted by: Steve Location: Denison on Oct 9, 2008 at 07:17 AM
Here's a thought...how about just giving him his cell phone back? Or I guess she COULD have called the police...sure would have saved dad a lot of misery.

Posted by: Leroy Location: Out There> on Oct 9, 2008 at 06:51 AM
WOW!! Ain't never heard of anything like that. I got big lips and don't need anybody tryin' to make 'em any bigger! I'd have shot that fool!

Posted by: wondering Location: durant on Oct 9, 2008 at 06:30 AM
That A school teacher doesn't have the sense to call police in such a situation.

Posted by: Bob Location: Denison on Oct 8, 2008 at 11:09 PM
What an insane man! he should be locked up for good!

Posted by: the Daughter Location: Durant on Oct 8, 2008 at 10:41 PM
Shockey didn't just ask for the cellphone...he walked uninvited into my home and demanded it. I wasn't there. I had his children with me (they had the phone) due to an earlier incident. All that was filed was a misdemeanor assault.

Posted by: The Daughter Location: Durant on Oct 8, 2008 at 10:35 PM
I actually was not there, but that is why my dad was there. I had seen him on my porch and driven away and my dad went to check. Mr. Shockey came INTO my house. And the other parts of the story are true. Dad's face looks horrible, but he's fine. My seven year old daughter is terrified, however and I have suddenly developed OCD type freakouts over whether my door is locked. There was also an incident with Mr. Shockey earlier that afternoon with the paramedics. Check it out. I just would like the people that end up 'prosecuting' (not the right word) this case never have to clean up their own father's blood from their stairwell. Or the pumpkin on their porch. I guess it makes the pumpkin more scary for Halloween....

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 8, 2008 at 07:20 PM
Sounds like she the big problem out of all of it. Why wouldn't she give him his cell phone back. Sounds kinda childish don't it ? Sounds like all three should of went to jail on that one. And for him to be a teacher what its showing the kids .. To fight your way out of it?

Posted by: ex cop Location: ardmore on Oct 8, 2008 at 07:18 PM
Thats ok , this scumbag is going to get more than that in prison. PROPS to the father for protecting his daughter no matter what....id do the same dude!!!!!
