GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. – After the Grayson County Jail failed its annual state inspection last week, repairs are now in the works. Stephanie Brletic has the details.

The three-day inspection took place last week, and most of the problems were minor, classified as “preventative maintenance.” Shower leaks, ceiling cracks, and loose tiles are the primary problems. Officials say those issues are being fixed right now.

Since receiving the inspection results on Friday, dozens of inmates have been moved out of the jail temporarily and taken to other facilities so repair work could be taken care of quickly.

Sheriff Keith Gary tells us the most severe problem on the report was a non-functional fire detection system.

Gary did not give an exact timeframe for completion of the work, but he says once everything is finished the Texas Commission on Jail Standards will be notified.

Can't anyone see that this is a monopoly?

With leaking pipes, bad plumbing etc there has to be health issues. Regardless of our crime slime being the guest there, they do deserve to be in a healthful situation, and the very fact that if they become sick, guess who has to pay for it.There is no way humans should be forced to live like/worse than dogs.Be humane about it, the county is setting the stage for a new jail by neglecting the one they have, and when it was built, wasn't it supposed to be a facility that would take care of the needs for years to come? Why can't they aquire land around the jail and build on?At a time when citizens are already hurting, Grayson County don't have the money, and the Gov't surely don't have it.Clean it up, and MAKE DO!!

You pay the taxes every week out of your check. So why can grayson county spend money to make repairs. You pay for the special meals that is prepared, when inmates get something diffrent to eat that day cause Mrs. Hudson wants to treat the jail staff. But when a trusty points out that other inmates are having trusties, spit, undercut their food, Pick there nose or do other things to their food. When reported for fairness no more trusty.I am not God. so neither are they. Pay to have control of fairness over all inmates.

prisoners are people also. What if one of your relatives made some mistakes would you want them in that environment !!!

Since sherman writes 200 dollar no seat belt tickets, and court minutes and fines are outta this world...Where does the money actually go? I think that the community deserves better protection than its getting, how can a seat belt ticket be the same as bail on more serious charges? You guys are getting a new jail, like it or not!

"most of the problems were minor, classified as “preventative maintenance.” Shower leaks, ceiling cracks, and loose tiles are the primary problems". Are you kidding me? Prisoners cannot possibly be expected to tolerate a cracked ceiling and loose tiles. How stupid. Most folks in Grayson county have these same issues and cannot afford to fix them because our tax dollars go towards keeping a luxury suite for each convicted criminal. I don't think they should even have indoor plumbing. Give them a bucket and some copy paper from the recycle bin to clean up with. They are prisoners!!!

get rid of the MUD SHARKS !!!

Frustrated has hit the nail on the head. This so-called "failed" inspection is nothing but propaganda to force a new jail. Look at the ceiling patch in the photo. Six-graders could do a better looking job than that one. Looks like it was purposefully left looking horrible for the inspection. Have YOU ever seen yellow sheetrock mud? Me neither.

Deb, I take it you are related to your fair share of felons. Maybe our father, sons, mothers, and daughters need to learn to abide by the law!

It is very possible that not everyone currently incarcerated is guilty of anything, or anything serious. The jail should be safe and functional, that doesn't equal luxury.

How in the world did we not know there was not interconnecting fire system in our prisons. Although these people committed a crime, they are fathers mothers daughters and sons. How could we jeapordize their safety like that? Do we not have a prisoner advocacy group looking out for the rights of prisoners?

The propaganda is beginning! We are going to have a new jail shoved down our throats, whether we want it or not. It would be much easier to maintain the current jail, quit using it as a profit center, and start using it as a place of incarceration for our local criminals. If our sheriff, county judge, and commissioners force this (a new jail)on us, everyone of them should be voted out of office. It is much less expensive to maintain as you go and provide only the nescessary services since it is a jail. Let's see how this works out. I think Bynum and Gary have it all worked out how to shaft the taxpayers.

Who cares, let the criminals ROT!

WOW Cooke County failed too!

That is just rediculous. It's JAIL, but they get it better than half the people out on the streets trying to make it. If jails were more unliveable, less people would be committing crimes, HELLO! Jail around here is nothing to be scared of...I have even heard people say that they did a crime just so they could go to jail where they'd have food and a warm place to sleep every day/night! It's gotten entirely out of hand.

Where is the management responsibility in this. Why does it take a State inspection to fix things. Why isn't it fixed as it breaks? It is always cheaper to fix it early. As a taxpayer, I am disappointed in the management of the Sherrif's office.

boo bad joke.

You would think for what they charge in fines, that this would be taken care of, not waiting till a inspection failure.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 14, 2008 at 08:52 PM
Who cares!!!!It isn't supposed to be a luxury hotel!!

Posted by: TX Mom on Oct 14, 2008 at 08:37 PM
I hope th County Commisioners learn from this and when the new jail is built - don't take the LOWEST BID... Take the most REASONABLE one. Check out you contractors for God's sake!! Don't pay millions of dollars for a high maintenance fiasco- again!! You really get what you pay for, especially in construction!!

That does it! I am boycotting the Grayson County Jail and taking my crime elsewhere.
