6-24-06 – The family of a young teen, killed after a tornado hit his home in May, is reaching out to other families. Colson Owens was one of three people killed May 9th when tornados ripped across the Collin and Grayson County line.
Colson tried to take shelter under a stairwell in his house on Black Road, near Van Alstyne, when the ceiling came crashing down. Four other people in the home survived.
Colson was 14-years-old. He was a freshman at Van Alstyne High School.
Saturday, the Owens family invited the community and parents who have lost children to help plant a memorial garden on the site where the Owens’ home once stood. Around two hundred people attended the planting.
A ceremony was also held, honoring Colson’s love for art. Before his death, Colson began to work with another local artist. Saturday, Austin Moody presented the family with a portrait of their son.
More than 250 trees will be planted in memory of Colson. The Owens family invites other families, dealing with the lost of a child, to plant a tree.
