MUESNTER, Tex. ― It has been just over a year since work started on the wind towers in Muenster. Now everything is up and running. Stephanie Brletic visited the wind farm in Cooke County on Wednesday.
Within the last two weeks, all 75 wind turbines were up and are now running, with each producing clean energy being sent to the power grid.
Each tower stands about 26 stories high, and each blade weighs about 13,000 pounds.
It is totally clean energy. The arms begin producing energy with wind speeds of just eight miles per hour, reaching optimal capacity around 23 miles per hour, with each turbine producing enough energy to power 250 homes.
There are other benefits aside from creating clean, renewable energy, like providing a major boost to the local economy.
"It's a plus for Cooke County because of the tax base that has been added. Approximately $200 million in tax base has been added, or will be added to the county next year," Cooke County Judge Bill Freeman says.
The 75 towers will produce enough energy to power 18,000 homes, but none of that will directly fuel Muenster. It will instead be added to a bulk transmission grid and then will be redelivered to distribution lines.
